On July 8, 2026, Eva Kaplan passed away peacefully at home at the age of 89 after a long decline with dementia. Eva was born in Havana, Cuba to European Jews instilling in her a gregarious Latin nature combined with the values found in the diaspora. In her late teens, before communism replaced the government, she relocated with her family to New York City to build a new life. Within a few years, she married Bernard Kaplan and became the mom to sons Mitchell and Richard. Not one for cold weather, the family relocated to Fort Lauderdale to start the next chapter. The main proprietor at Eva’s Art Gallery, she used her outgoing personality and artistic skills to build a successful business. Her ability to connect to perfect strangers was on full display as she made folks feel at ease and smile while providing exceptional products and service. After Bernie passed away in the late 1990’s, she moved to Palm Beach county to be closer to siblings. Through a mutual friend, she reconnected with the boyfriend she left in Cuba, Jack Teplicki. They have been together since late 2006 enjoying retirement traveling the world. During the ten years of her increasing debilitation, Jack sustained her with tender love and care.
She’s the youngest of seven children and the last of her siblings to pass away. From an early age, key information about her has remained unclear. That includes the date she was born (there are two more than a year apart) or the spelling of her maiden name (there are at least three variations). One thing is clear, she leaves behind friends and relatives that remember her fondly. That includes Mitchell and Amy Kaplan, and Rich and Janet Kazenel-Kaplan, granddaughter Ashley and husband James Dale, grandson Elias Kaplan, sister-in-law Ester Kazinec, as well as a slew of nieces, nephews, business associates, and friends.
Eva’s Funeral Service will be held at Star of David Memorial Chapel, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068, US, on July 10, 2026 at 2:45 pm.
Her Committal Service will follow at Star of David Memorial Gardens, Tiberias Garden, 7701 Bailey Rd, North Lauderdale, FL 33068, US, on July 10, 2026 at 3:15 pm.
