Chung on July 13, 1928 in the Parish of St. Catherine Jamaica. Nellie was called to higher
service on June 10, 2018 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Nellie was lovingly nick named “Nonin” by big brother Leonard and was also known as Aunt N,
Aunt Nellie, Miss Nel, or Chungie by her nieces, nephews, and many others. Much later in life
she was affectionately called “Chrissy” at the nursing home where she resided because that
was the only name she could remember, short for Christopher her grandson, she would call
everyone Chrissy and in return was called the same.
Growing up in colonial Jamaica, Nellie had 3 sisters, her twin Mavis (Girlie), Daisy (Sister D) pre
deceased, and Sylvia (Blossom) pre deceased, as well as 3 brothers, George (Leonard) pre
deceased, Cleveland (Ewen) pre deceased, and Wilfred (Breda Wilfred) pre deceased. Nellie’s
father died when she was just 12yrs old. At the tender age of 18 she left home, married, owned
her own business, and became a seamstress. Nellie’s spirit was yearning for more as she
became curious to see what was beyond her little Island of Jamaica. In 1952, she traveled to
the United Kingdom, where she witnessed the coronation of Queen Elizabeth ll and life was
exciting. During her stay in England she gave birth to 3 boys Junior, Delrado, and Alva. Then
came a little princess...Coral. In the Spring of 1962, Nellie was diagnosed with Polio and was
paralyzed from the waist down. She would then spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair, she
was devastated but her resilient spirit kept her going. In the fall of 1963, she would return home
to Jamaica and her family, facing the reality she had to rebuild her life and raise a small child.
Her circumstances however, did not hold her back as she was fiercely independent, strong
willed, and determined to start over. Nellie sought work as a seamstress at the Mona Rehab
Center in St. Andrew and also sewed privately for others. She was so talented that she became
well known and sought after as one of the best seamstresses in her area. Nellie gave her life to
Christ in the early 70’s and held strongly to her faith to the very end. She migrated to the United
States in 1979 where she lived in New Jersey and Colorado, before eventually settling in South
Florida with her daughter Coral and son-in-law Neville while helping to raise her grandchildren
Georgia and Christopher.
Nellie was of a loving, kind, and selfless nature always putting others first to the very end. In
return, Nellie was greatly loved and cherished. She was always ready to party at the sound of
the door bell and had a tender heart for those who were in need. Nellie’s bright smile will shine
on through her 4 children Junior, Delrado (Sandra), Alva, and Coral (Neville),13 grandchildren
Petrice, Rebeka, Sky, Dean, Darren, Stephen, Carl, Brendan (pre deceased), Tanya, Kayon,
Aerillion,Georgia, Christopher, 16 great grandchildren Riley, Cairo, Stephanie, Aaron, Erica,
