    We couldn't begin, To count the times
                  She tolerated our moods,
Consoled our heartbreaks & disappointments,
                          Endured our ups and downs,
  LISTENED to words confused by tears
                    And just simply understood
                                        For no other reason
    Than because SHE LOVED US.
                  The years hold
       PRECIOUS MEMORIES,
               But most, of all they hold growth.
         In a way, we grew up together...
             Mom is our definition
Of a special person... Fantastic...
          Exceptional...Unique...Enduring!
She filled our lives with HAPPINESS
         And sweet feelings that we will 
Carry in our hearts forever

I am Sadie’s Grandson.  Since childhood, I became aware that my Grandmother was lively and always had something witty to say.  

A few memories – As a child, I would walk her dog named Trixie.  I wasn’t the best dog walker, and found out I had a lot to learn about properly walking dogs.  In another memory, I remember going to some of her song and dance shows while visiting.  My Grandmother ran a tight ship, and everyone deferred to her as The Boss.  After the performance, she would candidly tell all the performers how they did, good or bad!  Once I tagged along to The Festival market with her, and she was treated like royalty by all the vendors who knew her.  

I will always fondly remember my Grandmother, and her indomitable spirit.

I remember when I First Met Sadie Sherman some years Back in The Nursing home where she Lived.   I was going to Introduce myself to her.  I knocked ✊on her room Door and I asked can I come In.  She Responded back, "only if you Have a eyebrow pencil ". I responded back "I don't have one, But I can get you one", she then said "OK come in". I remember sitting in the chair in her room, Sadie holding my hand and ask," I didn't catch your name, "what is your name Darling" I replied Beaulah   She replied reapeat that again Darling, I did.she then said " I will Never called you that name"as she Continues holding my hand, with that amazing smile she always had. As we sit in her room chatting  for 47 minutes  , I then tell Sadie my Lunch break is over, and I will see her Later. As she Continues to hold my hand, with that Amazing Smile as always she said ok Badulla, and she has ALWAYS called me this name   NEVER Beaulah. Sadie I will miss your smile,  our talks,  you’re amazing stories when you were in show business. I will  miss EVERYTHING about you, I LOVE YOU ALWAYS 

In1956 my parents sister and I emigrated to the USA from England. Aunty Sadie and my uncle Sid Greenfield, my fathers brother sponsored us and let us stay at their home in Metuchen New Jersey until my father found employment and an apartment for us to live in. I have many happy memories of our time spent with them. As I recall that time I have much gratitude for their generosity. I was also able to meet her sons Donald and Brian from her first marriage and spent time with cousins Tony and Susan. Brian taught me how to play chess. While we needed to return to England in 1957 due to my mother losing her mother suddenly and needing to assist her father. Our time with Aunty Sadie and Uncle Sid and my cousins has left me with many happy memories of that time period which I will always carry with me. Having settled back in the USA with my American husband who I met in England I  again had the pleasure of reuniting with the family and the joy of sharing many more memories since my return. 

Although I was not fortunate enough to truly know Sadie, I did meet her once at her granddaughter Raina Kotch’s wedding.  Lively and vivacious, with her makeup applied perfectly, is how I remember that one meeting. Raina and I are long time friends and former teaching colleagues.  We spent many years together teaching the same students and sharing family stories. As a result, I feel like I did know Sadie, and I certainly know the impact she had on her family, and in particular, her granddaughter Raina. From all that I know of her, I would describe Sadie’s life as one well lived.  May she rest in peace.

This is a photo of my grandmother, my mom and myself was one of the last family events we all attended together.  I will always  remember my grandmother as a women with an amazing spirit who  faced life’s challenges with passion and perseverance.  My grandmother was someone I have always admired for her feistiness and charisma which left an indelible impression on all who were fortunate to know her.  

Aunt Sadie, my Mother’s sister, had an epic life.

She witnessed two world wars.

As a young child, Sadie, my Mom, and other family members moved to Scotland to escape WWI in England.

She experienced the bombing of London by Nazi Germany during WWII.

As a teenager, she and my Mom both opened a ladies' millinery (hat) store in London. They closed it when a fascist, neo-Nazi office opened up next door. This was at the peak of fascist activity in England.

When she was older, Sadie enjoyed telling the story of her Mom’s (my grandmother’s) cousin Madame Lepuscu, who was the consort and later wife of (King) Carol II of Romania.

As the mother of four children, she often balanced family life with the need to generate additional income in post-war England. 

Later, she was one of the first in our family to emigrate to the United States, followed by Mom (her sister), Dad, and brother later on.

She loved life and was very open and candid in dealing with people. You knew exactly how you stood with her, at all times.

As a young child, I always remember her giving me toys to play with. It was always a thrill to visit my Auntie Sadie.

In later years, we moved to Long Island and Sadie moved to New Jersey. We would often visit and especially enjoyed visiting the house in Fords, NJ with the built-in backyard pool. It was always fun and exciting to make those visits.

As a success-driven person, Aunt Sadie became one of the most successful distributors of Tupperware during that company’s heyday. She had a company car and was always on the go for them.

Once retired in Florida, she dived into producing stage shows at the community clubhouse and made all of the costumes herself. She was very talented.

Aunt Sadie was always an impressive and towering figure in our family. I will sorely miss her.
