
Sheldon M. Sachs, 93, passed away on July 31, 2015 at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Shelly “Sunny” Sachs was born February 24, 1922 to Morris and Rose Sachs in Rochester New York, where he attended Benjamin Franklin High School. Shelly was a gifted athlete and student, earning a scholarship to and graduating from Harvard College in January 1944 with a major in physics and electrical engineering. He graduated early so he could attend officer training school and fight for his country. He was one of this country’s “Greatest Generation,” serving as a Marine in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he returned to Rochester to work on government projects at the Navy Ordinance Division of Eastman Kodak Co., specifically the proximity fuze. After marrying Peggy June Brown on December 29, 1946, Shelly began his career as a manufacturer’s representative in the automotive aftermarket industry eventually selling his business in 1990 and retiring to Florida. Shelly was an accomplished golfer, flirting for years with a scratch handicap at his home course of Irondequoit Country Club in Rochester, where he served as President, and later at the Woodlands Country Club in Tamarac, FL.
Shelly is survived by his wife Peggy; daughter Wendy (Bob) Goodfriend of Knoxville, TN; son Peter (Susan) Sachs of West Palm Beach, FL; Grandchildren Lauren, Lindsey and Dylan Sachs, Jeffrey (Kaye) Goodfriend and Stacey (Marc) Hodulich; and great grandchildren Riley, Gabrielle, Chase and Dylan. Shelly was preceded in death by his son Michael Scott of Los Angeles, CA. Services will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at 12:00 p.m., at Star of David Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Hospice of Broward County Foundation, 5300 East Ave., West Palm beach, FL 33407.
