Born in New York City on December 16, 1923, Sylvia graduated from Seward Park High School and married Herman Shapiro in 1948. They were married for 63 years when her husband predeceased her in 2006.
Sylvia worked at Brooklyn College in the Registrar’s Office for over twenty years. Warm and outgoing, she loved being on campus with the students and was very friendly with her colleagues. She was also a long-time volunteer for B’nai B’rith and the Shore Parkway Jewish Center, her temple.
Sylvia leaves behind her loving family: two daughters: Barbara Shapiro [Bruce Dennis] and Leslie Bialkin [Neil]; three grandchildren: Nicole Levy [Mark]; Cheryn Serenco [Michael]; and Jason Dennis; four great grandchildren: Kyle and Wyatt Levy and Bree and Sage Serenco; brother Irwin Cooper [Lenore] and sister Anita Furman; godsons and nephews Alan Cooper [Melanie] and Arnold Furman [Mary]; nieces Cindy Gallant [Greg] and Eileen Appleblatt; and nephew Keith Cooper [Tracey].
