Born October 17,1950 in Camden, he was the son of the late Bobby Gene Smith and Pauline Ables Smith. His family moved to Pine Bluff in 1957, and he graduated from Watson Chapel High School in 1968.
David continued his education at the University of Arkansas, graduating in 1973 with a journalism degree. He used his degree, as he worked for the Arkansas Gazette until their closing in 1991. He then worked, writing, for Arkansas Business Publishing Group.
David then went to work for the Arkansas Democrat Gazette in 1999 in the business section of the paper. He worked there until his retirement in 2019.
In the singles class at First Baptist Little Rock, David met the love of his life, Linda Gail Rountree. They got married at Sylvan Hills Baptist Church on May 13, 1989. They lived in Little Rock, and on February 7, 1992 they welcomed their only son, Joshua David Smith, into the world. In 1999, they moved to Maumelle.
David had been a faithful charter member of The Summit Church in North Little Rock. From helping his wife, Linda, rock babies in the nursery, to serving as a greeter, His love for Jesus showed in every aspect of his life. He also served as a Gideon in Maumelle. He would go to events all over the city handing out Bibles and telling of Jesus’ love.
In addition to his wife, Linda, he leaves behind his son, Joshua Smith (Taylor) of Cabot; and his grandson, Colton James Smith.
For the past 6 years, David has had Parkinson’s. Through these years, Linda has been a faithful wife serving as his caregiver through it all. The past 5 years, with his grandson Colton around, David and Linda had the pleasure of keeping him multiple times a week. The same way David so clearly taught his son Joshua about the love of Jesus, he helped build a strong foundation for Colton and his love for Jesus.
Visitation will be held Saturday morning, August 2nd, at 10 am at the Summit Church in North Little Rock, followed by funeral service at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gideons.
