James and his wife of over 49 years traveled everywhere together. They had a four seater Cessna that they flew all over the United States. He love to fly, Mildred not so much, but she was always up to joining him on adventure. They traveled in a travel trailer allover with their traveling companions, Mildred’s brother Jack and his wife Bonita Mitchell. They loved Arizona as a destination and would often stay a month in the southwest sun. They enjoyed cruises and especially like their Alaskan cruise. They frequented Mardi Gras and the roulette tables in Tunica.
Many of their travels were about visiting family, from hiking trails in the Rockies to aquamarine waters of the Caribbean to the sweet smell of pineapples in Hawaii. They enjoyed each other and had a marriage to be envied. James’s sense of adventure began early in life when he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the first submarine to enter the Sea of Japan days after the devastation of Pearl Harbor. He enjoyed duck hunting and fishing. He even went to Manitoba Canada to experience championship fishing. He was an avid photographer and accomplished golfer. He appreciated fine gunsmithing and high performance automobiles. He was especially partial to the metallic blue Porches and Corvettes.
He was a professional engineer that enjoyed a larger than life career. He helped Timex for decades before taking a VP position at Orbit Valve. He worked part time for the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology. He owned Leisure Realty for a short time. He was a man that believed in serving others. He served the city of Sherwood for 50 years on the sewer commission and the planning commission. He was a member of Sertoma, the Lions Club, American Society of Tool Engineers, Sons of Confederate Soldiers, AR Gun & Cartridge Collector Club, president of AARP, chairman of PVT Advisory Council, AR Rifle and Pistol Assn. as well as found time to volunteer at Lakewood United Methodist Church and fulfilled his responsibility to vote in every primary and general election with an educated viewpoint.
He was a man that did not sit idle and enjoyed learning. A true gentleman that never made a person feel unworthy of a smile and a handshake. His heart was genuine and his eyes bright. This earth was too small to keep him. He is dancing now with his love Mildred in Paradise.
