Sue was born November 21, 1935 to Joyce “J.H.” and Nell Irene (Musgrove) Osborn in McCaskill (Hempstead County), Arkansas. Mary wed the first love of her life, George Truitt “Dick” Duran in 1955 and had one son, David. In 1992, she was fortunate to marry the second love of her life, Herman Samuel Berger, who brought into the family one daughter, Julanne.
Sue graduated from Conway High School in 1953. From 1961 to 1966, she was employed at the CO-ED cafe, faithfully serving her many customers and friends. Sue went on to work for Baldwin Piano Company in 1966 prior to the war in Vietnam. Her younger brother, Homer, was drafted and sent to Vietnam leaving his young wife Betty at home. Betty enrolled at Arkansas State Teachers College to occupy her mind, asking Sue to accompany her. Both graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. That same year, Sue started teaching with the Pulaski County School District at Oak Grove Elementary, where she would go on to teach for twenty-seven years in that same building, during which time she obtained a Master’s Degree. Sue retired from teaching in 1997.
In her spare time, Sue served as the President of her local Kappa Kappa Iota chapter for several years. Furthermore, she was an avid reader all her life and could almost always be found with a book in her hands. Sue, otherwise, enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing.
