Alice Silverblatt, 87, was a ground-breaking speech pathologist, successful business owner, certified financial planner, realtor, broker, philanthropist, and poet, as well as an extraordinary mother, grandmother, wife, sister, friend, and confidant. She had the ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room. She passed away peacefully, at home, on July 14, 2010, surrounded by loving family and friends.
In 1980, after selling their thriving flower business in Pittsburgh, Alice and her husband Mort moved to South Florida, joining Alice's parents, long time residents of North Miami Beach. Alice graduated from Brooklyn College in New York, and completed her Master's Degree and all but her Doctoral dissertation at Columbia University. Before marrying and moving to Pittsburgh, she taught and worked with cerebral palsy students and their families, laying the foundation of what would become a national advocacy organization United Cerebral Palsy.
As a florist, she became a nationally recognized leader in FTD and TeleFlora helping to found a national organization for excellence in that field. After moving to Florida she worked, for over twenty years, as a financial advisor with Advest, Morgan Stanley, and MetLife, even serving as president of the Miami chapter of the International Association of Financial Planners. A woman of uncommon intellect and compassion, her philanthropic and humanitarian work was far reaching and involved numerous civic and community organizations, even as far as pioneering many of them, such as the National Organization for Women. A great supporter of the arts, she was herself a gifted writer and poet.
She is survived by her brother Myron Helfgott of North Miami Beach and New York City; son Gene Silverblatt and his wife Chris, of Salado, Texas; daughter Carrie Sue Ayvar and her husband Facundo of North Miami Beach; son Alan Silverblatt and his wife Laurie of Sugar Land, Texas; daughter Sugar Murphy of North Miami Beach, daughter Mary Blake Acosta and her husband Luis Acosta of Cutler Bay, Florida; grandchildren Khalil Ayvar, Soralee Ayvar, and Julian Murphy, all of North Miami Beach, and Nathaniel Silverblatt, of Sugar Land, Texas.
Arrangements under the direction of Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, Miami, FL.
