A parishioner of St. Rose of Lima, Avelina served as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and active member of the Legion of Mary. Her prayer circles include the God the Father Prayer Community, the Archdiocese of Miami’s Filipino Apostolate, Handmaids of the Lord, Our Lady of Fatima, Mother of Perpetual Help, Santo Niño, First Saturday, and Holy Trinity Prayer Groups, among others.
Avelina was skilled in dressmaking and a guardian of culinary traditions, learning from her nanay's business in Manila. She migrated to America in the early 70s. After brief residence in Georgia, Avelina settled in Miami where she met her husband, Felix. She worked at Miami Heart Institute as a registered nurse, birthed two children, Christopher and Celeste, and embraced her stepsons, Jojo and Jonathan. Mother Vi, as she was affectionately called by friends and colleagues, spent significant years with Mt. Sinai Medical Center and the VA hospital until retirement. Avelina passed away lovingly surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren, and loved ones.
