Born in Erie, Pennsylvania on March 31, 1926, he was the son of the late Isador Stein and Golda Stein (Wexler).
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Phyllis (Lancet) (2000), whom he affectionately nicknamed “Rascal,” and his cherished daughter, Hally Jo (1984).
David graduated from Academy High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Army. At the conclusion of WWII, David was honorably discharged and returned to his hometown to enter into the non-ferrous scrap business with his Father and marry his high school sweetheart, Phyllis. David and his father eventually became partners, forming Erie Metal Company, which David took over after his father retired and ran until his retirement in 1998. That year, David and his wife relocated to Miami Beach, Florida – the same city where they had spent their honeymoon.
After moving to Florida, David remained active obtaining a part-time job with Riverside Gordon Funeral Home and later as a concierge at the Aventura Mall. Until his later years, David was an avid golfer, and enjoyed training his various pet dogs and, yes, even cats, to perform tricks upon command. Little known was also the fact that David was the founding member and incorporator of the first Humane Society in Northwest Pennsylvania.
David believed, however, that his greatest accomplishment was the family that he and Phyllis created. As a testament to David, he is survived by his sons, Gary Alan Stein (Becki) of Chesterfield, MO and Craig Edward Stein, Esq. of Aventura, FL. The Stein family grew and David took pride in all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who now survive him. Grandchildren: Adam Jacob Stein (Kara) of Gainesville, FL; Alissa Rachel (Stein) Yamnitz (Ryan) of Overland Park, KS; and, Max Ryan Stein, Ethan Jared Stein and Raisa Halle Stein of North Miami Beach, FL. David’s four great-grandchildren include: Carter Phillip Stein, Cassie Elizabeth Stein, Addison Rachel Yamnitz and Elijah Edward Yamnitz.
Services will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2016 10:00 AM at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 20955 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura FL 33180. Entombment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Park, 10301 NW 25th Street, Doral, FL 33172.
The Stein Family would also like to recognize and thank three of David’s special friends; Steven Fenner, Eleanor Colon and, the incomparable Frances Hordes. So too, the family greatly appreciates the wonderful staff at Emerald Park Retirement Home in Hollywood, FL and the hospice workers from Season’s Hospice and Palliative Care who insured that David was treated with respect and dignity in his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Hally Jo Stein Award for Dance. Donations should be directed to:
Swarthmore College, Office of Gifts/Records, 500 College Avenue, Swarthmore, PA 19081.
Checks should be made payable to the College and contain a notation referencing the name of the Award.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels, Miami, FL.
