I am so sorry to hear of Jerrys passing . When I think back on my years as a radiology resident 35 years ago , an image of Jerry smiling is always the first thing that comes  to my mind  ! Jerry was a legend to all of us and was a brilliant neuroradiologist  as well as a fantastic teacher and friend .  He was responsible for training so many excellent radiologists  . I will truly miss seeing  him  at all our Medical School Alumni events .

     Grace and I were deeply saddened when Mike informed me of Jerry's passing.  I wish I had known Jerry better, but the memories posted on this site make it clear that he was a true gem.  My memory:  Jerry, though clearly leading a full and busy life, was not too busy to share a boat with brother Mike.  With his typical thoroughness, Jerry kept a log worthy of a ship of the line, which tickled Mike.

Sinai  ,to the OF Lunches(almost 68 years-Jerry ALWAYS left his Mark-caring, giving, a true MENSCH! Every time I’m taking a MRI  at Mt. Sinai, I ask the doctors and techs if they knew Dr. Sheldon(and of course sharing with them I’ve known him since  Beach Hi days) I’d KVELL at the responses. Just about a year ago today, at our OF lunch, I was sharing a personal story about an intense Arbitration case I had that lasted 5 days, some days lasting 9 hours.  Being retired I mentioned sometimes driving home I’d experience rather high blood pressure  ! As the lunch ended  Jerry said he had something to discuss with me and please stay a few minutes. “Michael, he said you should call Richie(Dr. Berger, our  high school friend and our Cardiologist), right away and share with him what you’ve experienced.” Two weeks later I received a call from jerry,—“have you called Richie yet?”—ONLY JERRY—-Our OF lunches will not be the same without Jerry’s warmth and smile to start it and his intellect and insight during our many discussions. Jerry was the best professor, mentor, colleague and friend that anyone could ever wish for…
Those of us who were lucky enough to know him were initially awed by his brilliance and command of medicine…
But his influence in matters of professional conduct and personal responsibility were even more important……
He always lead by example and everyone he trained learned he was as wise, funny and practical as he was smart…

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Jerry’s death. My memory will always be of him as one of my first “dates”, the first boy I ever kissed, which made me dizzy,  as I told my parents afterwards. Dr. Sheldon was my best professor EVER. He was brilliant, and he loved to teach.  He always put me on the spot in neuro- conferences.  He knew that was the best way to learn.  He was admired by his colleagues and staff.  He and Rita    attended our wedding back in 1982.  He will be deeply missed by Joanne & I.

I was so very sorry to hear about Jerry.    As an attending at Mount Sinai since 1982,  I came to rely on his radiology readings- they were the absolute best.  So concerned  was he about the care of patients, he would often insist I look at the films in person with him to really appreciate what was going on.  When his previous internist retired in 2017, I was honored he chose me to be his doctor(and yours too.)   I always enjoyed his visits and will miss the conversations we had.

My wife, Amy Cantor, and I are so sorry for your loss. We were residents at Mount Sinai from 1992-1996, and Dr. Sheldon (he will always be Dr. Sheldon to us) was our best and favorite teacher. This includes from elementary school through our fellowships. He taught us much more than just radiology. He wasn't just exceptionally smart, but he was also wise! I can still picture him smiling, that unbelievable smile,  at our wedding. Amy and I felt so proud that the two of you were able to attend. He touched the lives of so many and will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Jerry and I go way back-- to Ida M. Fisher Junior High School and Beach High--as Central Beachers. He was a year ahead of me but somehow got to be two years ahead in medical school!  We were in the same high school fraternity, the same fraternity at UF/Gainesville (TEP!) and then he found time to mentor me at UM Miller Medical School. Along the way we played football together--both linebackers!--although Jerry really played football!  We also played pool at Al's on Ocean Drive and 1st Street--striated 8-ball, as he--I called him the Schlepper--called it. He called me FestON! He went into Neuroradiology and I into Neurology.  I moved away from Miami after med school and went the academic and research route, at Duke, NIH and finally ending up in Kansas City and KU Medical School. Jerry stayed in Miami and Mt. Sinai but kept in touch and about 15 years ago nominated me for the UM Miller Medical School Hall of Fame!  I was so honored by that, and by the fact that my old friend thought enough of me to give me that honor!  You ARE a blessing, Jerry, and your memory will always be a blessing.  Rest in Peace, Schlepper.

Joy and I want to reach out to you,  dear Rita and family. We are so saddened by the loss of Jerry. whose wisdom and fellowship we enjoyed in our Book Club and Luncheon Zooms. His contributions were always so carefully considered and backed with his huge fund of knowledge. His warm personality  and generous nature made him a comfort to be with. Jerry will be sorely missed. 

Incredible teacher. Compassionate human being. Engaging and sincere friend. Always made you feel like the most important person in the room.  What a tragic loss. Actively involved in multiple community activities, in addition to his strong love for his family. Strong supporter of his alma mater the University of Miami School of Medicine, actively engaged in giving back to his beloved institution. There are no words to express the loss of such a wonderful person. To know Jerry Sheldon was to love Jerry Sheldon. He was a tough football player in high school who became a highly respected doctor in our community. I became close to Jerry through our men's luncheon group the last couple years. I spoke to him last Thursday and Friday as he was looking at a radiology report on a mri my wife had taken. He was so willing to share his knowledge and I felt so confident when I spoke to him. He was the kind of person, if he said something, it was meaningful. He had become a special person in so many lives. He is loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

Jerry Sheldon was a mensch!  I truly loved him as my teacher of neuroradiology and as a friend with a gentle smile and caring voice. I was sad to hear the news from my neighbor, Mrs. Louise Bauer.  Jerry was a great mentor and colleague to me and so many alumni from Mount Sinai Hospital.  He was brilliant, funny, and genuinely cared for his residents, for their education, and their well being.  It is the end of an era, but his legacy will live on in the countless lives that were touched by his expertise themselves and through the many physicians he trained over so many years that have traveled  across the globe.  Rest in Peace, Old Friend.
