Lucille “Lucy” B. Sokolow, 99, passed away on April 18, 2026 at home in Tamarac, FL. Born on September 28, 1926, in the Bronx, New York City, she was the daughter of Dora and David Bardach. Her father, David, worked as a tailor and was a proud member of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, while her mother, Dora, worked as a bookkeeper.
Lucy was a graduate of Hunter College in New York. She met the love of her life, Solomon (“Sol”) Sokolow when he was attending college in New York, after which he planned to return home to Dania, Florida. Lucy & Sol were married on June 1, 1947, in the Bronx and together made their home in Hollywood, Florida and later in Fort Lauderdale. They had three children: Diane, Jay, and Gary. Sol worked for many years as a Certified Public Accountant in both Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale.
Lucy devoted her professional life to education, teaching kindergarten through third grade in the Broward County Public Schools for 30 years. Even after retiring, her love of teaching and children remained strong. She continued working as a substitute teacher for several years and later volunteered for ten years with the Broward County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. Her dedication to children was evident in all she did, and family members fondly recall her regular dinner-table stories recounting the humorous and heartwarming antics of her students.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, David and Dora Bardach; her sister, Shirley; and her beloved husband, Sol. She is survived by her three children, Diane Thomann (Sokolow), Jay Sokolow, and Gary Sokolow; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom will cherish her memory.
Lucy will be remembered for her warmth, her devotion to family, her lifelong commitment to education, and her deep and enduring love for children. The family is grateful for the wonderful care she received in the last few years of her life, especially from Shermaine Gooden & Lorna Baugh who helped make it possible for Lucy to live comfortably in her own home until her passing.
