That left Sal's mother alone with 3 children to take care. Sal immediately took over as the head of the family.
At last the family was reunited in Miami and lived in the southwest area, where Sal helped his father make ends meet. He delivered newspapers at an early age and helped his father in a car wash
The family later moved to Chicago where the two parents could work and find a better life for their family.
Since both parents worked, Sal was left in charge of his two smaller siblings mike and Raquel and helped them get dressed and walked them to school.
It was a very trying experience as the Chicago weather was grueling and had sometimes to walk under below zero temperatures and several inches of snow.
Later the family moved back to Florida and they moved to Miami Beach.
Sal worked at a grocery store named Thrifty, where he was very much liked by the owners and the customers that went there. One of them was his future wife Rachel.
Rachel was on vacation from New York staying with her grandparents. She went to the grocery with her grand mother and Sal was very impressed with her. He bagged the groceries and walked with them across the street to the grandmother's house.
He said to Rachel, I hope to see you again but she had to go back to New york the next day and would not see each other until later.
The next year Rachel's family moved to Florida and settled in Miami Beach.
The temple at that time was located at the back of a store and had a strange hallway that lead to the entrance and thus the members called it "la cueva" translation "the cave". They had activities such as Saturday night dances for youth called Maccabee dances. One Saturday night Sal went to the Maccabee dance.
Rachel was told about the dances and decided to go with a friend.Sal said the dance was not that interesting and decided to leave and as he was walking out
Rachel and her friend were walking in. Sal saw Rachel and remembered her from the time he saw her at Thrifty's and turned around and came back to the dance.
He asked Rachel to dance and the rest is history.
They started dating and after a year they decided to get married.
Rachel was underage and had to ask her parents to sign and promised her parents they would complete the education and that they did. Both graduated from Barry University many years later when their younger son was 5 years old but they did it.
Rachel and Sal were always together pursuing dreams. Their theme song was "united we stand divided we fall" and that was true to the end.
Sal had a very challenging life, he contracted Chron's disease early in his life.
During the early marriage while Rachel was pregnant with the first son,Benny, The doctors said Sal had only few months to live. Rachel told the doctors not to tell him anything and through faith and love and the will to live to see his son, Sal miracuously lived and not only survived but lived a full life working two jobs at times and supporting his family. He was able to see his two sons graduate, get married to two wonderful women, Benny married Galina and Leon married Sophie.
Sal was always happy and was the life of the party. He sang and danced on both weddings and made everyone happy.
His happiest time was playing with his children and then when the grand children came Georgie, Leah and Daniel that was his biggest joy.
Later in his life the kidneys starting failing and again doctors would be negative but through all the adversity, Rachel and Sal fought together and Sal lived 10 years longer than the doctors had expected.
Sal was a fighter and that is the legacy he has left, he defied doctors and medical
science. Both his faith and love of family kept him alive.
At the end he became very weak and did not want to be a burden to his family. Though his wife Rachel kept reassuring him he was not a burden, he
felt that way and wanted to leave in peace.
Sal was a very faithful man and loved to celebrate Shabbat with his family.
Because he was such a great soul Ashem granted him the wish to have Shalom and he left this world in peace on his favorite day-Shabbat 8-18-18.
