Born on May 8, 1930, in Benghazi, Libya, to Amos and Misa (Legziel) Labi, Vittorio was the youngest
of six children (Aldo, Yvonne, Norma, Benny, and Wanda). From a young age, he knew hardship, as
his father passed away when Vittorio was only two years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his
siblings.
During World War II, with his mother and sister (Wanda), he was taken to Bergen-Belsen
concentration camp. His eldest brother (Aldo), a British officer, was able to negotiate a prisoner
exchange, ultimately freeing all of them. By 1946 Vittorio arrived in (British Mandate) Palestine
where he fought in the Palmach for Israel’s independence. In 1952 he moved to London, and in
1953 he set sail for the Dominican Republic. He joined a Jewish refugee settlement in Sosua and
met Margot Codik, the woman who would become his beloved wife.
He and Margot married in 1954 and raised their three sons, Marlon (Adria), James (Bruce), and
David. In 1964, the family moved to Puerto Rico, partly due to the political unrest in the Dominican
Republic. In 1970, they moved to Miami, where he enjoyed many years of steady employment and a
more stable life. He was able to spend more time with family and friends, including four
grandchildren, who lovingly called him Opi: Carolina (Stephen), Aileen, Daniel (Tracey, Jay, Jimmy),
and Michael (Nicole). He lived to meet four great grandchildren, Drew, Amelia, Sophia, and Natalie.
Vittorio’s family extended far and wide, with deep ties in Israel, London, and Italy, and a special
bond with his wife’s family in the Dominican Republic. (Hella and Motzi Blum, Manfred and Oneida
Codik, Sandra Codik, Jackie and Rodolfo Rosario, Emily and Terri McCoy, Maury and Brittany Codik
and children). He always showed a keen interest in the lives and history of the people he met.
Having spoken six languages, he always searched for connections with those around him.
His memory will forever be a blessing. His legacy will live on through his family and all who loved
him.
A funeral service will be held at Lakeside Memorial Park in Miami, Florida on March 17, 2025.
