One glorious day, an angel was born on February 14, 1956 on the beautiful island of Jamaica. Her name was Hortense Blake (better known as Tency), daughter of Christine and Lloyd Blake and sister of 8 siblings. Beautiful, classy, vivacious, fierce, and full of love, Hortense grew to have a passion for hair, and a love for family and friends.
Hortense sacrificed and made her way to the US to seek a better life. She married Cyril Mallette, and bore 4 children, Kerry, Marcella, Orrett, and Althea. She was a dedicated mother and wife who was loved by everyone around her. Tency followed her dreams to become one of the hottest beauticians in Miami owning a total of 3 salons. All she needed was her Jamaican music to swing her hips, and curling iron. She was more than a stylist. To many, she was a mother, a best friend, a counselor, and a sister. There will never be another T&C Beauty Salon.
Hortense was known to be a connoisseur in the kitchen, and the queen of parties, and the strictest mother you can find. Even when you thought you weren’t hungry, when you smelled Tency’s cooking, you were surly to leave with a plate. Her rum cake during the holidays would leave you with a DUI.
Tency was later diagnosed with myeloma cancer at the age of 58. She will then spend the next 6 years fighting for her life. She lost that battle one early morning October 14, 2020. She closed her eye and met the lord. Her legacy lives on leaving behind 7 grandchildren (Eric, Kiara, Malique, Kwame Jr., Katelyn, Knowledge, Price) and 2 great grandchildren. Rest in peace beautiful. Gone but never forgotten.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.caballeroriverosouthern.com for the Mallette family.
