Irma Balthazar was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Friday October 4, 1929 . She was the daughter of the late Ocelia Philis and Altimus Balthazar. As a young girl she loved to listen to chansonette francaise and gospel music, and developed a beautiful singing voice. Raised Catholic, she attended a private boarding school and by the age of sixteen she went to a vocational training school to become a seamstress. Talented with a sewing machine, she used this profession to support herself and her family creating dresses for friends, family, and many women from church.
Irma was a woman of great faith and courage who endured many challenges in life. At the age of seventeen, she became a young mother and was blessed with five children. When she needed something done, she always found a way. With the help of one of her best friends, she made the life changing trip to the U.S. in 1967 and was the pioneer for the rest of the family to make their journey.
Her devotion to God and her children led her to live a sacrificial life of love and hard work. She raised her four children as a single mother while also taking care of her elderly mother. In addition, while overcoming medical challenges, she poured herself in service to her church and community rescue missions by helping other women.
She is survived through her sibling, Pierre De Marseille, her children, Nirva Balthazar Lespinasse, Yves Balthazar, the late Marlene Frederick Fourcan, the late Eddie Balthazar, and the late Marie Jose Denis. Also by her grandchildren, Jean Denis, Evangeline Desrosiers, Emmanuel Lesly Denis, Peterson Denis, Egeline Alix, Samuel Denis, Nancy Danielle Lespinasse, Michael Lespinasse, Ernst Lespinasse, and Gary Balthazar. Additionally, she has over 12 great grand-children.
We honor her today, thank her for her love, hard work, and sacrifices. She paved a way for the generations after her to have easier lives. We send her much love and light as she continues her journey forward.
