At an early age, Jessie and her mother moved to Miami, where they laid down their roots. Jessie graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in June of 1967. She also attended Job Corp in Oregon and earned college credits at Miami-Dade College.
Jessie started working at Bellsouth (AT&T) in April of 1972. She held several different positions at the company. She retired, after 45 years of service, from Bellsouth (AT&T) in February 2017.
Jessie gave birth to one child, Alysa S. Fobbs. Her child was the light of her life. She was also the proud godmother to Alexis L. Pryor.
In 1991, she met the love of her life, Freddie Leggett. They married on May 1, 1993. Together, they formed a blended family. Freddie brought three sons into the union: Robert Leggett (deceased), Freddy Leggett, and Jermel Leggett. Freddie’s sons became her sons. And she was very proud of the adults they have become.
Prior to and after retiring, Jessie enjoyed sewing, traveling, shopping, visiting her grandchildren, and attending the retirement community’s various activities. Let’s Talk was one of her favorite activities to attend. She was able to discuss political and social issues with members of the community, which she absolutely loved. Jessie was also a voracious reader. There was never a time that she was not reading a novel. She even adjusted to the present day and bought a Kindle, which she carried with her at all times. She was also a fierce defender of women’s rights, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, and worker’s rights. In other words, she was a proud liberal!
Jessie is survived by her loving husband Freddie, her mother Alice M. Best, her daughter Alysa, her sons Freddy and his wife Tiara, Jermel and his wife Tamease, brother Jesse Forbes and his wife Linda, brother Ricky Forbes (deceased), sister Lutrica Harris, god daughter Alexis L Pryor and husband Ricky, mother-in-law Lois Leggett, the following in-laws Kenneth Leggett, Carol Leggett Worthy and husband Ernest, Janice Leggett Loud and husband Irwin III, Gail Leggett McVea and husband Curtis (deceased), Milton Leggett and Shelia, Reginald Leggett and Leigh, Michael Leggett, eight grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
Jessie will be sorely missed. However, the love that we shared with her will sustain us as we navigate life without her earthly presence.
A visitation for Jessie will be held Friday, October 27, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Caballero Rivero Southern Funeral Home, 15011 West Dixie Highway, North Miami, Florida 33181, followed by a celebration of life service from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.caballeroriverosouthern.com for the Leggett family.
