Mathilde Yvette Badio Laurent was born on November 1, 1932, in Petion-Ville, Haiti. She was the first of three children of Vilason Badio (deceased) and Laura Tassy (deceased). Her and her siblings, Max Mede and Marie Mede Pamphile, were reared in a loving and effluent family. She was called Yvette by her close family and friends. Her aunt, Marianne Belizaire, was her best friend. She attended school with Mrs. Anglade, and after primary and secondary school, she pursued education as a seamstress.
As a beautiful and sophisticated young woman, Mathilde made the acquaintance of a charming and ambitious gentleman by the name of Lemoine Laurent. The two of them fell in love and were married. From their union, they bore six children that brightened their lives together: Marie Jose Laurent Chevalier, Jean Robert Laurent (deceased), Claudinet Laurent, Panthio Laurent, Pierre Lemoine Laurent, and Reginald Laurent.
Mathilde moved to the United States in 1975. Although her husband, Lemoine, said, ”I did not bring you here to work; I brought you to the United States to take care of me and Pierre and Reginald”, the youngest two children, she had her own ideas. Mathlide was determined to find a job. She worked very hard for the benefit of her children. Mathlide wanted to work in order to send money back to Haiti for her siblings. Finally, Mathlide found a way and secured a job at the Dupont Plaza Hotel in downtown Miami, where she worked for eight years. Throughout her life, Mathilde was known for her direct, humorous, but no-nonsense approach to addressing unacceptable behavior. She had high expectations for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. The name Mathlide means mighty in battle. Our beloved Mathlide was indeed mighty; she will be remembered by her family and friends as a vibrant and lively person who would do her best to help others. She had a special love for children. She was a true depiction of womanhood and sophistication. Mathilde Yvette Laurent was a classy lady, a true class act.
