Rupercia Naomi Sterling-Lawrence, daughter of the late Robert & Agnes Sterling was born on March 28th, 1927, in Airy Castle, St. Thomas, Jamaica West Indies.
On Tuesday July 30, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother transitioned peacefully from her earthly abode to her new home in heaven. Service celebrating her life will be held on August 17th, 2024, at The Greater Miami Church of God in Miami, Florida.
Rupercia, affectionately known to many as Myrtle or Aunt Myrtle, attended Airy Castle Primary School and later taught for many years at the Airy Castle Elementary School. Always eager to learn she furthered her education by attending and graduating from The Jamaica School of Commerce in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies. After graduating she taught Stenography, typing and shorthand. She was also an accomplished seamstress who designed and made clothing for families, friends and neighbors. She was often commissioned by the local school to make uniforms for many of its students.
In hopes of making a better life for her children and herself, Rupercia seized the opportunity when it was presented to her to migrate to the United States to work as a caregiver to others. Rupercia’s aim was to bring her children to America to be with her. This she was able to accomplish within three years of migrating to the USA. When her health was affected by the cold weather up north, she moved to Miami, Florida where she continued caring for others.
Rupercia attended The Greater Miami Church of God and had been a devoted member for over twenty-five years. She was an active member of the Seniors group within the church and occasionally contributed her time and experience to writing “Xmas” plays for the seniors’ group or by making decorative pillows for the seniors’ fund raising.
A caring, loving, devoted and compassionate mother/person Rupercia is survived by her three children, Patricia Eleanor Douglas, twins Hansel and Valerie Allison, grandchildren Donald G. Douglas, Janice Denise Douglas-White, Karen Renee Dixon, Nahesha Naomi McCatty, Hansel G. Allison 2nd, Kaden Clark & Davon E. Scott. Nineteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
She was predeceased by her loving and devoted parents Robert and Agnes Sterling, siblings Michael Josiah, Joshua Ezekiel, Samuel Timothy, Mary Clementine, Ruth Rupercia, Jemima Naomi, Julia Remelda, Miss Hill, Cyril James and 1 (sibling) miscarriage. Two granddaughters Kyssandra Althea Miller & Alexandra Shakespeare.
