Asuncion was born in Manila, Philippines, to Judge Guillermo B. Guevara and Asuncion Palma on August 26, 1926. As a young woman, her life was shaped by some of the most turbulent years in Philippine history, transitioning from old Spanish traditions to new American friends. She emerged from those experiences with the resilience, faith in God, and strength that would define her life. After attending the University of the Philippines, she spent time assisting the Carmelite Nuns of the Holy Trinity in Bicol, Philippines. She later found her calling and married Dr. Domingo Mariano Aviado, a medical student she had met in post-war Manila. After their wedding on August 15, 1953 in the Philippines, they immediately flew to San Francisco and drove cross country to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they settled and raised four children. In 1978, they moved to Short Hills, New Jersey. For the past 25 years, she has enjoyed the community of Palm Beach Shores with her year round garden full of tropical fruits and avocado trees.
Asuncion was known for her quick mind, remarkable memory, and love of telling stories from her long and extraordinary life. She valued education and remained a lifelong learner, reading books, staying current on news and politics, and seeking out new skills and experiences. Late in life, she learned how to knit, and delighted in creating gifts for her loved ones or to donate, as well as teaching anyone interested in learning. She loved to travel and believed in the value of experiencing other places and cultures. From Cuba, to the Galapagos, to Russia, and beyond, she created countless treasured memories throughout her life. As a pilgrim, she visited innumerable holy sites around the world. Music was another lifelong joy of Chon’s. She was a skilled pianist and at one point could be frequently heard playing Moonlight Sonata on her piano. She sang in the choir at Saint Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills for many years, and she and her husband traveled the world to enjoy opera in classical venues. Above all, she valued family and friendship,
investing deeply in relationships across generations as well as in the futures of those who came after her.
Her devotion to God was a cornerstone of her life. Her Catholic faith sustained her and remained a constant source of strength throughout her 100 years. She was a longtime parishioner of Saint Rose of Lima Church and, for the past 25 years, a member of Saint Paul of the Cross Parish in North Palm Beach.
Asuncion was preceded in death by her husband, Domingo M. Aviado; her daughter, Maria Aviado; and her son, Carlos Aviado. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Maria Christina Kimble; her son, Dr. Domingo G. Aviado, and his spouse, Dr. Corazon Bahia; her son Carlos' widow, Doreen Aviado; her sister, Rosario Dimayuga; five grandchildren, Paul Gentile, Peter Gentile, Dominick Aviado, Dr. Kimberly Aviado, and Dr. Randy Aviado; and four great-grandchildren, Paul Gentile Jr., Jude Gentile, Avery Aviado, and Viviana Aviado; and numerous family and friends throughout the country and the world.
