Bernice graduated from St. Ann’s School in West Palm Beach. She worked as a telephone operator for Bell Telephones during World War II. She and her husband, Duke, started Downs Construction Company in 1945. Bernice did all of the bookkeeping for Downs Construction Company for 40 years. She loved being on the water and spent many weekends in the 50’s and 60’s water skiing in the intercostal. When she turned 70, she traded in her water skis for a jet ski. She and Duke could be seen jet skiing up and down the waterways well into their 80’s. Bernice and Duke loved to travel and enjoyed many adventures over the years. They traveled extensively through the states, Canada, and the Caribbean and finally found their favorite spot in the mountains of North Carolina where they spent summers during their retirement.
