I have shared so many memories and stories with Arthur as he always made an effort to visit me at my office.  He was a very kind and gracious man with so much love for his wife, Mirium and family.  We spent a lot of time at boat shows here in Ft Lauderdale and Palm Beach. He will be missed by many.

Dear Miriam and Arthur Jr., 

Even though there has always been distance between us, in years, as I was just 6 years old when my big cousin and his dear Miriam departed for the USA, and literally, as there were ‘oceans’ between us, Arthur and Miriam, and later, you too, Arthur Jr., and your children were always part of the family gatherings we had in The Netherlands. News was shared of the comings and goings, the joys and sorrows of all those family members, widely spread across the globe. As a young child I especially loved listening to dear aunt Hilly, telling about her family visits to Norway, the UK, Ohio and off course Florida. With the ‘kiekjes’ (photos) she showed, you all were ‘there’, even though not in person. 

And now, sadly, Arthur has gone, much too soon. The ‘tall big man with a deep voice’  who gave big hugs  wheever we met during his visits to The Netherlands. And the last time we met, a huge bear-hug with no words, as that was a sad time too. 

Miriam and Arthur Jr., I wish you both, and all your loved ones, family and friends, near and far, comfort in your sorrow.

Dear Grandpa, I am wearing one of your shirts as I write this. Just got hands on it, still smells like you. Almost like I can feel your very tight hug once again.

You have left us far too early, such an upstanding man, who also never failed to make people laugh. Always caring for those around you and trying to pass on your wisdom and teach something, even if it seemed like an irrelevant fun fact or a small detail nobody was listening to, I was always listening and I am very grateful to have had the chance to listen to you, and I wish I still could 

Now I will have to go on to life trying to be the best man I can, carrying with me your moral compass and integrity, to try to make you proud, because I like to believe that somehow, somewhere you are watching. It's comforting and helps me always make right and honest decisions. 

Still haven't accepted that you're gone, you are very missed and loved. Words can't describe how grateful I am for everything you taught me, gave me, did for me and our family. Thank you for always being so present even if you were so far away, for your phone calls, long voice messages and texts, for every word, every trip to Brazil, coming to school presentations and events, birthdays and holidays, helping our family here with what we could be needing, for flying me back to the US, showing me your office at work and all the boats, we spent very nice times together and I am beyond grateful for it. 

Thank you for forever being my grandpa, I love you with all my heart, and I will forever wish I had a better chance to say goodbye, tell you all of this and some more in person, holding your hand and being with you until the very end. You deserved better than the ending that life gave you, you deserved more. 

I hope you knew how much you meant to me and how grateful I will always be.

Dear friend,
We met when I was 6 and you prabably 5. We were neighbours in Tietjerk, a village near Leeuwarden. We played together and had lots of fun. Grew up together and shared the passion of boats, sailboats offcourse. You had a netwerk of beautifull girls and we organised several tours on our tjalk, the Risico, since I was just 18. That is how I met my wife Anneliet and were I met Miriam for the first time. So much fun together, laughter and  jokes. You married Miriam and went to the States. I visited you in Detroit and Florida, and we met in October last year. Still best frieds and always curious in how the yachting market developped. You as a broker, I as a marina and waterfront consultant. We bought a motorboat 2 years ago and traveled from Friesland via the French canals to Montpellier. Now we are in Rome with our boat. You sugested to bring it to the States and do the Great Loop.  You lept away after a severe and dishonoust disease. We will always miss you.

During our stay in Florida with both of you, Arthur and Miriam, I got to know Arthur as a remarkably  loving and devoted husband and father.
When I think of Arthur, the fun we all had together, comes  to my mind. Laughter in the 'Everglades', on boats and in shopping malls - his beautiful sense of humour! 

I am so sad for you Miriam, Junior and grandchildren that Arthur had to leave you at such a young age.

Dear Arthur,
I, too, am saddened by your passing. Of course, we saw your passing coming closer, but when it finally happens, it still comes as a complete surprise. My real memories of you are limited, because you left for America soon after I started a relationship and married your sister Inge. What immediately came to mind was our trip to America. The time with Aunt Dine, our journey through the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge Mountain Trail to Florida, and of course, the wonderful time we spent with you and—of course—your wonderful hospitality. I especially remember our visit on one of your boats with no fewer than three motors and full of extravagant luxury. And not to forget the wonderful adventure of our trip along the Florida Keys to the very tip of the United States, 90 km from Cuba.
Of course, you did all of this together with your dear Miriam. In my eyes, you were a true and close-knit team. That team also came to an end with your passing. As I said: I, too, am very sad.
Your final journey has begun. I have a wonderful and fond memory of you. And as for your teammate: we will never lose sight of her and will support her—if ever needed—wherever we can.

My dearest Uncle Arthur

It is strange to think of a world without you in it but you leave behind a legacy of love and family, which is the very best there is.  I remember you as being playful and interested, always making time for family and being a wonderful brother to my mum.  I remember your wedding with Miriam, where Saskia, Mum and I all wore coordinating dresses, courtesy of Mum's sewing skills.  Not sure I'd go for that look again :) . If I remember right, just after your wedding we moved to Norway and you moved to the US. A long distance apart but we always kept in touch and shared a love of sailing. You are going to be very much missed and I send my arms around the people you leave behind.

I met Arthur 20+ years ago in Florida through a mutual Dutch friend and we have been in touch since. On a regular basis were sending each other funny text messages and connected during boat shows to catch up. Arthur I always enjoyed our conversations and admired your passion for the boating industry. You left us way too early.

I have had the great pleasure to be a friend of Arthur for around 25 years. When we first met during a boat sale it was clear to me that Arthur was  a person of knowledge honesty and integrity. Arthur became not only someone that would help me buy or sell many boats but became  a very good friend that I had the pleasure to share many laughs with often over lunch at local marinas . I will never forget his comment when I told him I had bought a boat company. His comment was “ you know how to make a “small” fortune with a boat  company?…Start with a “large” one.. I will miss my good friend , the laughs , his knowledge and all the great things that made Arthur the Great Man he was and those memories will always remain in my thoughts.  
To Arthur Jr. …Your Dad always spoke proudly of you and frequently would tell me how well you were doing with  the challenges you were facing being a single parent in Brazil. He loved you and was so very proud of the job you have done raising his fantastic Grandchildren . He always spoke about  them lovingly and was thrilled when they were able to come and visit.
To Miriam, In this very difficult time you have demonstrated the Love you each shared for each other. The support and caregiver role you were cast into was enormous and you did it alone , without hesitation ,continuously
and with loving perfection. My last visit with Arthur he told me that he didn’t want to be the burden he had become for you . Most importantly please remember that he also told me you were there for him watching over him doing everything possible to help him and make him as comfortable as possible. It was clear he appreciated it ,loved you and clearly made the right choice for a partner, best
 friend and WIFE.

Dear, dear Arthur,  How deeply and intensely I grieve now that you have passed. Who would have thought—the youngest of the four of us, and the first to fall asleep forever. And to think you were never sick a single day, while your three sisters are beginning to creak in their joints. I’m so proud of those two young people who took on the American adventure and everything you both built together. You really did it—and complemented each other so well. Arthur Jr. and the children will miss Dad / Grandpa / Einstein so very much. I hope Jr. can comfort the children when they feel sad, but I have every confidence in him—he’s a wonderful father.
I have so many cherished memories: our childhood in Tietjerk, sailing, canoeing, searching for lapwing eggs, ice skating, and so much more. Then the time you lived with me in Groningen while attending maritime school. Our trip to America in 2008, when you surprised us by coming to Canton—what a joy that was. Our stay with you, Miriam pampering us, and our shared journey to the Florida Keys.
Who would have thought that your visit to the Netherlands in October 2024 to see both families would be the last time. How lucky we were that Irene came over from England, so the four of us were together again. I treasure that day.
After everything you endured in these last months, you deserve your eternal rest—no matter how heartbreaking it is.

Miriam, I have deep respect and gratitude for everything you did for Arthur. I wish you much strength as you process this grief and find a new balance in your life. Of course, Piet and I will always be here for you if you need us—and also just for the joy of being together.

I remember you as very considerate with family and friends. Always in contact and always social. 

I left our parents house when you 10’years  old. We missed but shared a lot together! 
 Always in harmony. 

You  lived your life living for others. Your parents, own family and more. Admire you. 

You from a sailors- sea family!  Your both grandfathers from the sea !!  Captans and engineers in Indonesia. 

You lived your life in love- sailing away in love. 
Have peace. I know you found peace  in love with your dear Miriam and junior.

He was a man of duty and virtue.
His voice was deep and commanding. I remember watching him, from time to time, enjoying a Camel non-filter cigarette along the boardwalk. I was just a boy then, but even at that age I sensed something extraordinary about him.

Tall and handsome, he carried himself like a man’s man—aristocratic, highly intelligent, and always sharply dressed. He treated my mother, his colleague, with kindness and respect—and treated everyone the same way. It always seemed as though he knew something others did not.

His humor was versatile: fit for the docks, the pubs, or shared warmly around a Christmas tree. Above all, he loved his family deeply—and they loved him in return.

He has gone far too soon.

Rest in peace.

Dear Uncle Arthur

I am beyond pleased to have spent some time with you last October. Who would have known what was to come. I remember you fondly, always up for a laugh, a fast driver, and a confident, strong person with an unbreakable family bond. Thank you for always being so sweet to my dear mother, your sister Irene,  she cares so deeply for you, her baby brother. We will make sure Miriam and Arthur Junior are OK, they may be far away but we all have our arms around them. I do hope you are now sailing the nicest of seas with my father Gordon and talking about your sailing adventures together over a whiskey or glass of wine. Until we meet again one day when it is my time. 

Miss you and wish we had more time to catch up. Rest in peace.

To my wonderful brother

From the start of your illness till 14 days before your passing, I shared daily messages with you. Messages about my life, my boat, and my children. You  always replied with a kiss or a heart. Special that was. So very special. Your phone was never far away with your son all the way in Brazil. 

It is hard and I will miss you, but harder still for Miriam, Junior and the grandchildren.  Yes they might from time to time loose the chart with which you navigated them through life, but they will always find it again. 

I love you broertjelief. I wonder how many times I told you that.  Thank you for being my brother.
