Just met his son this morning at the Riverside
Memorial Day ceremony in Jupiter. Spoke with Mike briefly and informed him I was in the same unit as Ernie at Homestead AFB back in 1970 timeframe.
Both Ernie and I were radar weapons controllers
for the 726 TCS (Tactical Control Squadron). He was a very good controller but a great person and golfer!
And I had forgotten he was an All-American at UM - I remember it now.
It was a pleasure meeting you this morning Mike!

We had the privilege of Ernie joining our family when he married my mother, Gretchen.
What she loved about him was his rugged good looks and big personality. We soon came to know that she was correct on both accounts. Just as big as his personality was his love of family. He always praised his children and bragged about his grandchildren without end. We never felt like he was not part of our family and he always made us feel like we were a part of his. He held strong to his faith and true to his beliefs no matter what. We always loved the way he shared his gift of music by playing guitar and singing. It was always a blessing! Most fun was seeing him get to laughing. The huge, perfect teeth movie star smile would come and then the tears would start and we knew, we would just have to wait it out. The thing that was most appreciated was his love and dedication to Mom. He cared for her with strength and dedication.always. He will be missed but stories will be told and memories shared!

Uncle Ernie and I had a lot in common; although we weren't around each other that much, we made our visits count. Like that time when he came to our homecoming football game in Jayton and I scored my 1st touchdown pass and pitched it to him. He looked at mother and asked who was that? She said that was Jimmy. WOW way to go Jimmy he said. Then again we had our golf days at Perrin AFB. I and his brother Jerry had lost a lot of expensive Titlelist golf balls that day. He was determined to get the last one out of the water, about 2 feet deep; as he reached he asked Jerry to hold his hand, and Jerry, like a good brother gave him a push and Ernie wasn't having anything to do with that, so he grabbed Jerry by his new Banlon T shirt and stretched it so much, that t-shirt was now down to Jerry's ankles. They were quite a mess and Liz warned them not to come across her rug from the front door and made them go to the back door porch and change to dry clothes before you can get in. Just one of the humorous things I remember about my best uncle!

There are so many wonderful memories of Uncle Ernie, especially the times with all the family picking and singing. I will never forget when I was in high school, listening to the radio and waiting to hear the name "Tobey" when he played college football for Miami. I feel blessed to have seen him last July, again picking and singing and laughing. He even gave me a CD of his songs...now cherished more than ever. My love and prayers are with you, Mike and Jen...and the entire family during this very difficult time.
