Dr. Varela was born on October 11, 1924 in Camaguey, Cuba to the late Fernando Varela and Mercedes Victoria Acosta Varela.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Varela; daughters: Patricia Varela-Hoehmann (Ron) and Sherri Varela-D’Agata (David); son, Fernando Luis Varela II (Anja); and eight grandchildren.
Private family services were held. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The American Parkinson Disease Foundation (www.apdaparkinson.org).
