Born on May 11, 1953, in Dauphin, Manitoba, he was the son of George Caven and Elizabeth Carmichael. He attended the University of Western Ontario, where he received a degree in chemical engineering and later a Master of Business Administration. He worked in the natural gas industry in Canada and the United States until his retirement in 2020.
To those who knew him well, Jim was kind, thoughtful and eager to help. He had a life of incredible adventures - growing up playing hockey in Canada, heli-skiing out west, racing sailboats in the Caribbean, and traveling internationally. His happiest moments were spent by the water and under the sun, walking on the beaches of New Hampshire and Florida with his dogs Lucy, and later Winnie.
Jim was known for his quick sense of humor, relentless work ethic, and competitive drive. He loved the game of golf - whether it was having his kids film his swing or sneaking onto the course to practice before the ranger was awake, he was a passionate and dedicated player and fan of the sport.
He is survived by his wife, Lindsey Carmichael, his children Ashley (Carmichael) Blackington, Keegan Carmichael, and Liam Carmichael, his son-in-law Todd Blackington, his grandchildren Aoife Blackington, Beau Blackington, Greta Blackington and Beckett Blackington, his siblings, Sally Bryant, Susan Burgess, Jennifer Carter, Lesley Carmichael, Nancy MacDonald, and John Carmichael, and his first wife Catherine Bouthillier.
He was predeceased by his father, George Caven Carmichael (1994), and his mother, Elizabeth Carmichael (2020).
A memorial service will be held in New Hampshire in early 2024.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
