

Captain James D “Bud” Smith (1919-2011) of North Palm Beach died on Wednesday August 24th 2011. He was a member of a local pioneer family who live his entire life in Palm Beach County. He served his country in the Corp of Engineers (1939-1945) during WWII. Upon return to the Port of Palm Beach, he served as Assistant to the Port Director until 1947. He joined the West Palm Beach Fire Department and retired after 27 years of service as Assistant Fire Chief. He was well known as a charter boat and private boat captain and marina operator (Bill’s Marina and Sailfish Center). He is survived by best friend and wife Rosemary, his sons James D Smith and wife Phyllis Smith; Captain Timothy Smith and wife Randi Smith of Palm Beach Gardens; daughter Theresa Smith; grandsons David, Darryl, Timothy, Jayme and granddaughter Crystal Smith; and great grandchildren Isaac James Smith, John Paul Gorman, Lucy Hope Smith and Micah John Smith. He attended Northboro School and Palm Beach High School where he excelled in football and track where he won many awards. He was always proud of his High School coach’s statements that he was the best line man they had ever coached. While serving his country he won awards as being a fine sportsman and teacher in Engineer School. Family will meet friends as Howard Funeral home on Thursday September 1st from 5PM to 7PM for a memorial service. I lieu of flowers please send donations to Hospice of Palm Beach County.
