1939-2026
It is with profound sorrow that the family of John James McGrath, Jr. announces his passing on June 6, 2026, in Palm Beach Gardens FL. Our beloved Patriarch is now at peace, resting in The Lord’s loving care. John fought serious health issues starting in mid-life, but prayers, courage, determination and excellent medical care kept him with us… a blessing that family and friends will cherish always.
Originally from Philadelphia and later Lansdale PA, following high school John (“Skip” to many) enlisted in the US Air Force for 4 years, proudly serving stateside and near East Asia with the 2876th GEEIA Communication Squadron. Following Honorable Discharge, John was employed by C. Schmidt and Sons, Inc., Valley Forge, PA. Upon that company’s closing, he was hired by Matlack, Inc., Norristown, PA., the largest tank truck carrier at the time, with terminals across the nation. During his more than 25-year tenure there, John was elected for 12 years as Shop Steward for Teamsters Local #384. He had an incredible memory. After traveling to a customer once, John never had to consult a map no matter where the location. Eventually, he became Matlack’s number one senior driver, hauling dry bulk materials from coast to coast until health issues forced his retirement in 1994.
At the center of John’s life was “Camie”. They met when he was hospitalized briefly in Philadelphia where Miss Carolyn Campbell, R.N. was his nurse. A year later, in 1963, they married and by 1966, were the proud parents of two sons…John James 3rd and David Scott.
Throughout his life John instilled a strong sense of morality, patriotism and conservative values in his children. He flew the American Flag outside his home for over 50 years and voted in every election he could. He was an avid reader and easily conversed in current political, national and world events. John was generous to a fault to include supporting his wife and sons’ career pursuits. He relished large family gatherings, and especially loved sharing stories and celebrating, with pride, the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren… a true family man.
John has been described as a “Man’s Man”. In his prime he hunted and taught his sons how to hunt responsibly and to respect firearm safety. He loved football, having played in high school and as a semi-pro following his military service. The Eagles were his favorite pro team. He watched NASCAR racing and the Indy 500 his entire adult life. So many hunting seasons and family vacation days were spent at The Hunt Club, Wellsboro, PA., founded and built by John and like-minded buddies. Also, enjoying the game of golf as he did, he joined Tyoga Country Club, an area course. John was strong, fearless, loyal, worked hard, was quick witted, and passionately protective of his loved ones.
In 1996 as “empty nesters”, the McGraths moved from Lansdale, PA. to Palm Beach Gardens, FL. There, sunshine, mild winters, leisurely drives along the ocean and plenty of relaxation served to help with health issues for John. Eventually he was able to play a slow game of golf with memberships at Cypress Links and later Eastpointe Country Club, where he earned a “Hole-in-One” plaque in 2005. He enjoyed the game, but mostly the comradery of his many friends.
Shortly after relocating to FL. John became active in his community homeowner’s association resulting in his election to the Board and 10 years as President. He knew almost every neighbor by name in the 180 + residences he served. Even lately, while outside his home, he never missed an opportunity to chat with a neighbor passing by.
Surviving is his adored wife of 63 years, Camie, beloved sons John J 3rd (Beth) and David S. (Lisa). Also, his devoted sister, Barbara McMaster and her family, dear grandchildren Lacy McGrath Male (Isreal) Will McGrath (Brianne), Harley McGrath Hardy (Ross), John M. McGrath (Fiancée Hanna), Triplets Anne, David and John McGrath. Also, great-grandchildren Grayson, Fallon, Canon McGrath and Bruce Hardy, brother-in-law Scott Campbell (Nancy), several cousins, nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Anna McGrath and his brother-in-law Charles McMaster.
John’s Celebration of Life Service was held in Boca Raton, FL, officiated by Reverand Andrew Siegenthaler of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. Entombment immediately followed at The Boca Raton Mausoleum. Final arrangements were conducted by Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral Home and Event Center, North Palm Beach, FL. where John’s obituary may be viewed online.
Words can’t fully express the wonderful blessings from the love, care and ongoing support given by family, friends and neighbors…so very much appreciated. For those desiring a donation in John’s memory, please consider Wounded Warrior Project, Samaritan’s Purse or a charity of your choice. Thank you.
