Josephine (Jay) Mascaro, born October 5, 1910 passed away peacefully after a brief illness on February 13, 2011 four months after celebrating her 100th birthday and after being a 27 year ovarian cancer survivor. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alfred in 1978 after 39 years of marriage. They moved from the Bronx, N.Y. first to Riviera Beach and then to Lake Park, Florida which was home for over 40 years. For the last 10 years she lived in Palm Beach Gardens, with her loving daughter, Rita Mascaro and Alex Marlowe. She was also known as Jay or Josie by many friends. Her favorite things in life was that she loved to sew and worked for Bergdorf Goodmans, Henry Bechtal’s and Rogers and Hammerstein before coming to Florida. She then worked for Lillie Ruben’s in Palm Beach and Jacobson’s in Palm Beach Gardens before retiring at the age of 84. Both she and her husband Alfred were founding members of Elks Lodge 2069 North Palm Beach. Her favorite past times were sewing dresses for her daughter for special events, cooking spaghetti and her special meatballs for her family and friends of her children that came to her home. She loved to party. During the last three years she found a new love on Sundays, at the Square Grouper restaurant with a special group of men that gave her rides on their Harley’s and that’s how she arrived at her 100th birthday on the back of a Harley.
She is survived by her daughter, Rita Mascaro (Alex Marlowe), son Alfred Mascaro, granddaughter, Marcy Dann (Christopher), great grandchildren, Christina and Robbie Dann, Besty Mascaro, dear friends, Genie Van Santen and Delores Garner and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 6-9pm. A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the funeral home with family receiving friends an hour before service. Entombment to follow at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, Josephine was a lover of animals and would appreciate making donations to Safe Harbor of Jupiter or Peggy Adams animal shelter in her name. God bless my family and friends.
