Kenneth Powell

June 15, 1948November 25, 2019

Kenneth Lee Powell, Sr., June 15, 1948-November 25, 2019, was born at home in Watha, N.C., to John and Marie Powell. He is survived by his wife Natalia, and his two children Natasha Retting and Austin Powell, as well as, four Grandchildren Kenneth Lee Powell III, Savannah Retting, Lukas Retting, and Juliette Retting. He also survived by Aunts, Uncles, and multiple Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins. Ken spent his younger years growing up on the farm, with his Brother John, and Sister Lynne, moving to Fort Lauderdale when he was 10. After graduating High School, Ken voluntarily joined the Navy, during the Vietnam War. He served honorably, and of his time in the service, he was most proud of being a plank owner on the USS John F. Kennedy.

Ken established a life in Davie, where he raised Kenny Jr., with his then wife Laura. He was involved in the growth of the Town of Davie, where he owned and operated the Hitching Post, a place where he created many fond memories, and friends. In addition, Ken operated a nursery and landscaping businesses. At that time, he was also very involved in the Rotary Club.

After divorcing, Ken decided to move to West Palm Beach to start a new life. Soon after his move, he met Natalia, and they married in February 1995, a year later. Together they raised Natasha and Austin, with Kenny. He spent many times traveling and experiencing numerous life long memories, with the family. Marrying two large families together and made most of our gatherings a small party, which created tight bonds with all.

In 1996, Ken joined the VFW and the American Legion. Aside from his family, Ken found his other Love in the American Legion. He devoted much of his non-family time to the service of Veteran’s through the American Legion. It is through this passion, for Veteran’s and their selfless service, that he touched so many people’s lives for which they were better. He was pivotal, with his best friend Joe Thibault, in literally putting little Post 141 on the map. Ken rose through the ranks, to make it to his highest rank Commander of the Department of Florida. Through his 25 years of service, he helped educate to give access to services many did not know they were entitled to.

Ken will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to have him in their life. There will be a Celebration of Life will be held, December 6th, from 1-3, at the Elks Lodge 6188 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, Florida 33413.
