Kurt began his career in Germany as a graduated master cabinetmaker, building a strong foundation in woodworking and craftsmanship. His professional path later expanded into work with German manufacturers, where he contributed to industrial development and global manufacturing. His efforts supported growth in developing regions and included significant involvement in furniture hardware, logistics, and import export operations. In the later years of his career, Kurt partnered with IKEA through his company, VASA America Inc., in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where his sharp mind for numbers and logistics left a lasting impact on every project he touched.
Upon retirement, Kurt fully embraced his passion for travel, spending many years exploring the United States and Canada in his RV motor home. He was also an experienced and licensed glider pilot in Germany—a pursuit that reflected both his adventurous nature and his appreciation for precision and skill.
A gifted storyteller, Kurt loved to talk, connect, and share his experiences. He found joy in playing golf, studying history, and traveling the world. Skiing in Europe remained one of his greatest pleasures, offering him both peace and exhilaration.
Kurt spent his winters in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and cherished his summers in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where he especially enjoyed the Thursday night summer concerts in the park.
Kurt will be remembered for his curiosity, warmth, and the remarkable life he lived across continents and cultures. He leaves behind his wife, Dotte of the home; his son, Robert Garbe, and daughter in law, Daggi Ponto Garbe; his brother, Ernst Garbe, and sister, Hella Gude, all of Germany; as well as Lee and Carolyn Barksdale and Bill Chandler of North Carolina. And many nieces and nephews in both Germany and North Carolina, along with a host of friends and colleagues around the world.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Lisa Gibson and Stacy Jones for their loving care and compassion.
Details for a Celebration of Life will be announced once finalized.
