Born in White Plains, NY November 26, 1925 to Helen and Police Lt. Edward Joyce. After graduating from White Plains High School he enlisted in the Army in 1943 and drove a tank under General Patton. In 1948 he joined the White Plains Fire Department attaining the rank of Lieutenant. The first fully appointed Fire Chief in North Palm Beach, also Chief in Lake Park and Palm Beach Shores. State certified in Police, Fire, Fire Inspector and EMT also State of Florida Fire Marshal in 1982.
Past President of the Florida Fire Chief’s Association. Member and many times Sgt. Of Arms for the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs. Life member of Palm Beach Co. Fire Chiefs. Former member of the Riviera Beach Fire Department Pension Board. Active in the former Elks Lodge in Palm Beach Gardens and North Palm Beach. Names Elks Fire Fighter of the year for performing CPR on an infant while in flight on a commercial airliner. The commanding officer of a fire in Old Port Cove, also in 1981 causing a 3.2 million dollar loss which was determined to be arson.
He is survived by his wife Betty of 58 years. Daughter Susan Magnotta (John), and son Edward J. Joyce, II. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren; Joann Strobel (Richard), John Magnotta (Brooke) and Barbara Magnotta, and two great-grandsons Jake and Ricky Strobel.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 24, from 4-8 PM at the Howard-Price Funeral Home. Mass of the Resurrection will be on Friday, June 25 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul of the Cross. In lieu of flowers contributions to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407 would be appreciated.
