Lucille (Lou) Shelton Hickman; our beloved Mother, Grandmother (Mono), Great-Grandmother, Sister-in-law died September 28, 2018, surrounded by her family and friends. She was born and raised in Knoxville, TN, the youngest of eight siblings. She quit school in the eighth grade to help her mother, DoraBelle Shelton, after the passing of her father, Henry Shelton. She eloped at seventeen and married her husband, Jack Hickman and started her family when she was eighteen. In 1982, when Jack died, she took over Asenjo Plumbing. In a field that is dominated by men and with no business or construction skills, Lou continued the family business with great determination and the help of her son, Bernie. With the unimaginable loss of Bernie in 2005, Mark Longwell came to Lou’s rescue to continue the business and became a surrogate son.
Lou took great delight in the opportunity to travel: Italy, the Baltic Sea countries, Spain and France, and she lived vicariously through the travels of her children and grandchildren. She was proud of her five brothers who served in WWII and attended the 50th Anniversary ceremony at Pearl Harbor. She was a member of the Seminole Chapter, DAR.
Lou wanted to be remembered for what she felt was her greatest accomplishment…her children, Gail, Jackie and Bernie. We will remember her unconditional love and support.
Lou leaves behind her daughters, Gail Vastola (Dr. David Vastola) and Jackie Duke, daughter-in-law Laurie Hickman. Grandchildren; Jennifer (Michael), Sean, Jason (Jacqueline), April (Corey), Amanda (Chris), Lindsey (Meryl) and Aryn (Caitlin). Sisters-in-law Mrs. Pat Reed and Mrs. Marie Shelton. Nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-granchild and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Riverside Memorial Park, Tequesta, FL on Tuesday, October 2nd at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Hospital would be appreciated.
