Nancy Ellenorah Calkins

Nancy Ellenorah (Neelands) CALKINS died June 15, 2020 in Hospice near her home in N. Palm Beach, FL after an extended illness. Nan was born May 10, 1934 in Clio, Michigan, to Jessie Eva (Carr) and Hugh Wendell Neelands. She graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Arts Education, and Western Michigan University with a Master of Fine Arts degree. She was a teacher in Dearborn, Kalamazoo, and Jackson, Michigan before changing to a career in Real Estate. Nan was President of the Women’s Auxiliary of Cranbrook House and Gardens, Bloomfield Hills, MI, and was a member of several civic and service organizations including AAUW, Red Hats Club, Meals on Wheels and P.E.O. Her priority was her family, but she also enjoyed travelling in the American West, England, France and Italy. She will be interred at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Nan is survived by her adored and adoring husband of 64 years, Daniel H. Calkins of N. Palm Beach; son Brian D. Calkins and his wife Melanie of Dawsonville, GA; daughter Laura M. Calkins, PhD of Lubbock, TX; brother, Rolland C. Neelands and his wife Carol of Truckee, CA; granddaughter, Caitlin E. Calkins and her wife Laura of Smyrna, GA; grandson, Andrew B. Calkins of Atlanta, GA and many nieces and nephews. Nan was predeceased by her parents, beloved sister Elizabeth Jane Epker Palmer, and grandson, Michael H. Calkins. The family is grateful to Henritta Brown, who assisted Dan with Nan’s home-based care. No services are planned due to the current pandemic. For those who wish to memorialize Nan, a donation to the P.E.O. Foundation (peointernational.org/contributions) or St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Palm Beach Gardens would be appreciated.
