We celebrate the life of Paul Desmond, who passed away peacefully on October 1, 2018.

Born in 1940 in Oak Park, Illinois, Paul moved to South Florida in 1952. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1958, and from Florida State University in 1962.

After college, Paul joined the U.S. Army where he was a member of the Green Berets—an elite division of the Army’s Special Forces.

Mentored by stock market legend L.M. Lowry, Paul dedicated his professional life to the study of financial markets. In 1972, he was named president of Lowry Research Corporation. In his 54 years with the company, he made groundbreaking research advances and became a respected authority in the field of technical analysis.

Paul was honored as Technical Analyst magazine’s 2009 Technical Analyst of the Year. He served as president of the Market Technicians Association from 1997 to 1999, and was awarded its prestigious Charles H. Dow Award in 2002. He was a frequent contributor to financial news outlets, including Barron’s, The Wall Street Journal, Wall Street Week, CNBC, and Fox Business News.

Paul was known industry-wide as a generous mentor and a skilled writer. His ability to educate people on financial markets through the lens of Supply and Demand will remain legendary.

No less legendary are the love and loyalty Paul poured out on his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, his humility, his staunchness of character, his love of a good story, and his endless wonder at the fascinating and serendipitous nature of life.

He will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 49 years, Mary Lou (née Richards), and by his beloved daughter Kristen and son-in-law Joffre LeFevre. He was a dear uncle to Mary Lou Nason (Nathan); Diane Nick; Andrew Nick, Jr. (Monica); Robert Nick (Darcy); and Elizabeth Hainan (Shaun). He will be remembered lovingly by his grandchildren David Nason, Sawyer LeFevre, Wyatt LeFevre, and Elisabeth LeFevre.

A memorial service will be held at 1 o’clock on Monday, October 8, at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul can be made to STOP! Children’s Cancer of Palm Beach County at www.stopchildrenscancer.com/donate.

My deepest condolences to Paul's family. I met Paul through the Market Technicians Association. We worked on many projects for the association and attended many annual conferences. Paul was intelligent, articulate, and a strong advocate for technical analysis. I always was impressed with his deep respect for "Mr. Lowry." Paul never forgot his roots in the investment world. Thank you for all your significant contributions to technical analysis.

Mr. Desmond and AMB Investment Advisors in Thomasvilla Georgia did business together for many years primarily though our mutual colleague Mr. Greg Adams —who relocated to Palm Beach from Thomasville.

Over the years, AMB ( investment advisory firm) was on numerous calls with Mr. Desmond and we all understood we were in the company of one of Wall Street’s finest. A real privilege.

I came into the investment business in 1981 when my mentor at the brokerage firm introduced me to Lowry Research and Paul. While my personal calls to Paul were infrequent over the years, there was never a time when he too busy to visit with me about the markets. I'll always be appreciative of that and the personal insight he would share.
