Theresa Viola

Born on December 31, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Theresa grew up with a strong sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to the people and causes she held dear. These qualities would come to define a life lived with remarkable intention and grace.

Theresa distinguished herself professionally as one of the very first female compliance officials with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, breaking barriers at a time when few women held positions of authority in federal government. Her pioneering role reflected not only her personal determination but also her deep conviction that the natural world deserved protection. That conviction extended well beyond her professional career. She went on to form a group in Moorestown, New Jersey, dedicated to purchasing forested land, ultimately donating hundreds of acres to the New Jersey Lands Trust. Through her vision and tireless efforts, she helped preserve irreplaceable natural landscapes for generations to come, leaving a legacy etched into the very earth she fought to protect.

Yet for all her professional accomplishments, Theresa's greatest devotion was to her family. A mother of three boys, she never missed an event her children were involved in, whether it was a school performance, a sporting match, or any milestone along the way. Her presence was constant, her support unwavering, and her love unconditional. She and her husband, John Viola Jr., shared a deep and enduring partnership, one enriched by their love of travel. Together they explored the world, though Italy always held a special place in Theresa's heart, a connection that spoke to the roots and traditions she cherished throughout her life.

Theresa was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Viola Jr. She is survived by her three sons, John Viola III, James Viola Sr., and Paul Viola, her daughter-in-laws Catherine Viola and Carol Viola, her Grand Children Alycia Viola, Amanda Viola, John C. Viola, Cecilia Viola, James Viola Jr. Lauren Viola and Sabrena Mynatt all of whom carry forward the values of dedication, integrity, and love for family that their mother embodied every day of her life.

Theresa's faith was a cornerstone of her existence, providing her with strength, comfort, and a guiding light through every season of life. Her devotion was quiet but profound, shaping the way she treated others and the grace with which she moved through the world. Those who knew her understood that her kindness, her generosity, and her commitment to leaving the world better than she found it were all reflections of a deeply held spiritual life.

In her 98 years, Theresa Viola accomplished what few can claim. She changed the landscape of environmental policy, she preserved the land itself, and she raised a family anchored in love. Her legacy will endure in the forests she saved, in the paths she opened for women in public service, and most of all, in the hearts of the family she adored.
