and his wife Sandy Armour after a long illness.
He leaves behind his wife of over 40 years Sandy, his beloved daughter Aileen Selkirk and
husband Alan Lennox, grandchild Irie Selkirk, great grandchildren Magnolia and Greyson, and
nephews Graham Birkett, Mark Birkett and Nigel Birkett. His sister Helen Birkett predeceased
him.
He was also much loved by his sister-in-law Debby Franzen, her husband Jeff, his niece Shona
Ferros and husband Scott, and great nieces Elle and Charlotte.
Alan Armour was born in Clydebank Scotland on December 29, 1934. He emigrated to Canada
at the age of 23 and became a Canadian citizen in 1965.
He worked in Sudbury, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary (Delaval Turbine) and finally Vancouver
where he formed his own company focussed primarily on engineering equipment sales to the
oil and gas industry.
Alan and Sandy travelled extensively over the years in Europe as well as Asia, New Zealand and
Australia. Business travel also included trips to South Korea, Malaysia and South America.
Alan was a very keen tennis player. He and Sandy were members of Jericho Tennis club in
Vancouver where he played for over 30 years and enjoyed his many friendships there. Alan
won a number of championship tournaments including the B.C. Provincial championship for the
age 75’s and over among others. He particularly loved his trips over the years to Palm Desert to
watch tennis pro matches at the annual Indian Wells Tennis Tournament.
Alan had a great sense of humour and loved a good joke. He was particularly proud of winning
the “most honest golfer award” when he participated in the ex-Presidents’ Gas Processors’
Association’s Annual Golf Tournament in Calgary a few years ago.
He was very appreciative of the superb quality of home care he received from the nurses and
support staff of the North Shore Home and Community Care Services in the last months of his
life as well as of the oncologist and nurses at the Lions Gate Hospital Chemo Clinic.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, please consider a donation to the B.C. Cancer Society or to the
Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.
