June 30, 1927 – April 26, 2024
Pixie, as she was fondly called by family and friends, passed away April 26 in Richmond.
Born in Victoria, BC June 30 1927 to Cecil Clark and Mary Clark (Marshall). Mum attended St. Margarets Private School and attended many school reunions over the years. At the age of 17, she marched on the BC Legislature buildings in Victoria to protest the war. Mum volunteered at Royal Jubilee Hospital for six weeks during the war and the thought of becoming a nurse was born. In 1947 she enrolled in nursing at UBC and did her training at St Paul’s Hospital, receiving her RN designation, then joined as staff in January 1949 where she continued as a Surgical Nurse. In 1951, Pixie met Keith Millar at a house party she was dragged to by her friends and the rest is history. Mum & Dad were married in 1953, then moved to West Vancouver where she then gave up nursing to start a family.
Her hobbies included gardening, reading, antiquing and as an avid knitter and crocheter many families and friends still wear her knitted sweaters and toques today. Pixie was a longtime soccer & baseball Mum for her four kids and grandkids and was seen many times keeping score at baseball games or on the soccer sidelines cheering on her kids. She was the foundation and support of our family, which no doubt enabled Keith’s commitment to enhancing sports opportunities over many decades for baseball and soccer which gave thousands of young and older people the chance to play. Three separate soccer leagues (North Shore Girls, NS Women’s, NS Men’s Intermediate) as well as lead two baseball leagues (Cypress Park Little League, WV Pony & Colt) and also Vancouver Metro Soccer League. With this support their legacy can be seen on North Shore fields today.
Mum worked in the West Vancouver School District #45 from the time her youngest went to school. She started as a volunteer mum at Cypress Park Elementary School, then was hired in 1973 as a Remedial Aid, splitting her day between Pauline Johnson (mornings) then back to Cypress Park (afternoons). Then hired full time, where she was first at West Bay then over to Ridgeview and finally, to the BIG kids’ school, West Vancouver Secondary till her retirement in 1992.
Pixie is predeceased by her husband of 42 years Keith Millar, older sister, Joan Smith, as well as friend Bob Sheldon. She is survived by her younger sister Julie Sabiston (Jim) in Lantzville. Also surviving her are her four children, Malcolm (Ann), Wendy (Chanchal), Ian (Trish) and Robin. Her Grandchildren Kevin, Jasmine, Michael, Charles, Katherine and Sam. Great Grandchildren, Reyah, Jacob, Amara, Phoenix and Atlas, as well as nephews and nieces. She loved all her children and families and since moving to Richmond took great delight and happiness being with her two youngest Great Grandchildren who never ceased to entertain her. With her health failing, mum was moved to a care home and having being tired of the roller coaster of life, got off this ride and as she had wanted, walked over the bridge. WE LOVE YOU MUM!
Thank you to the medical nurses and doctors who looked after her as well as the staff at the Hamilton Village Care Centre. There is no funeral planned, but a future Celebration of Life may take place.
