March 17, 1920 - September 30, 2021
Arthur left us peacefully on September 30, 2021 at the age of 101 to join his beloved wife Grace.
Arthur was born on March 17, 1920 in London, England. He was the youngest of 2 boys and definitely the mischievous one. Arthur didn’t have the opportunity for much formal education but he didn’t let that stop him. His life’s journey provided him with a wealth of knowledge which he happily shared with all he met.
Arthur joined the British Navy at the age of 14 and moved up through the ranks. He retired from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer after 15 years of service. During his time in the Navy he travelled the world several times and would tell stories of his time in Malta when the Queen and Prince Phillip were there, about conflicts in Israel (then Palestine), China, India and the Suez Canal. His time in the Navy also saw him serving during the 2nd World War.
Arthur met his wife Grace at a movie theatre in London, England. They had an amazingly romantic relationship which saw the dashing Naval Officer and his beautiful bride marry in February 1945, while he was still in the Navy.
Arthur’s love of adventure and curiosity for life saw him immigrate to Canada in 1956, followed a few months later by Grace and their daughter Debbie. Arthur worked in many careers following his arrival in Canada. He was a salesman in a hardware store in Richmond, and did night work cleaning office building air ventilation systems. He then moved on to a position as secretary-manager of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, leaving there for a career with Delta Hotels as the Sales and Promotions Manager in the mid-1960’s. Arthur then moved the family to Campbell River where he became the manager of Delta Hotel’s Discovery Inn. Arthur’s career would see him return to Vancouver with Delta Hotels for a short while before becoming the Director of Communications with BC Central Credit Union where he worked until his retirement at age 60.
Arthur took early retirement in order to spend as much time as possible with Grace prior to her death in 1981.
Arthur went through life with the belief that you could attain any goal if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to put in the time and effort to achieve it.
During his life he met people who would become lifelong friends. He has been affectionately described over the years by his family, friends and business associates as kind, generous, loving, wise, knowledgeable, gracious, dignified and always a gentleman.
Arthur will be held in the hearts of all who knew him especially his daughter Debbie (husband Niels), granddaughter Amanda, grandson David (wife Rene), great grandchildren, Ava, Zachary,
Josephine and Hayley, and AJ who he embraced as a grandson. He will also be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews and their families in England, along with his inherited families in Canada and all his wonderful friends.
For nearly 3 years Arthur called Sunrise of Vancouver home. His family would like to thank Sunrise for taking such good care of him. The kindness, professionalism, respect and love shown by the management and staff to Arthur, his family and friends is a memory we will treasure forever.
As long as we remember Arthur and keep him in our hearts he is not really gone. His love, his words of wisdom and his enthusiasm for life will remain a part of us all forever.
Anyone wishing to honour Arthur’s lifelong commitment to family and friends are invited to make donations to BC Children’s Hospital.
