Biography
Avelino Misola, also known as “Bill” to many of his friends, was born on November 10, 1939 and raised in Sta. Cruz, Zambales, Philippines. He was the son of Purification Muyano and Vicente Misola. He grew up with five siblings, one younger brother named Romualdo, three half sisters and one half brother.
Avelino was raised to be a respectful and obedient young man, always aiming to please his family and others around him. He was known to be very empathetic at a young age, considered warm hearted, doing kind acts for others and as a result was very well liked within his community. He truly cared for people, making certain that those around him had what they needed when they were in his presence. These wonderful traits were the essence of who young Avelino was and would remain throughout his life.
Sentimental and a romantic at heart, on March 2nd 1970 Bill married Procesa Marcha at a registry office (civil) in North Vancouver, BC. After immigrating into Canada in 1971, they had a church wedding in September 1971. Following their marriage, Procesa and Bill were blessed with the birth of their two sons to complete their family. Compassionate and devoted to Procesa all his life, Bill liked to publicly profess his love for his wife by singing "To You, My Love" at family parties. Harmony in life was important to Avelino and he made every effort to maintain it with his family.
If you attended any party with Avelino, you would remember him as the “life of the party”. He was popular and at ease in a crowd and could mingle and talk to anybody with his “gift for the gab”. He loved to talk, and talk and talk… Although always tactful; you could count on him to say what he meant when he meant it. He was a bright light in a room and people were drawn to him and sought him out as they felt comfortable and supported in his presence. Avelino had strong personal convictions and high standards for himself and his family. He never judged or was critical of somebody else if they differed from his path or beliefs. He accepted people at face value, as they did him. When Avelino made friends, he made true and lasting friends. One of the examples of that kind of friendship is Lorenz Betinol. Lorenz and Avelino met while they were working on the freighter ships in 1969. They remained best friends, loyal and devoted to each other for the 47 years that followed.
Avelino was a Custodian at the West Vancouver School District for 28 years. Taking his work seriously came naturally to Avelino, and he expected the same standards from those around him. He was a good team player, someone you could count on to support and facilitate. He was known as a “people person” on the job and he had solid communication skills to back that up. He was a steady hard worker, one who was realistic about schedules. He balanced doing what was necessary to get the job done and to have consensus and cooperation in the workplace always respecting his colleagues in the process. After retirement, Avelino enjoyed traveling with Procesa and his family and friends. They took a Caribbean Cruise, a European Tour, a Mediterranean Cruise, travelled to Hawaii, Punta Cana, Cuba, and a Holy Land Cruise.
Avelino passed away on May 26, 2016 at Lions Gate Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his spouse Procesa; his children Neil (Lisa) and Glen (Bernadeth); and his grandchildren Emily, Alyssa, Violet, Kian, and Noah. Services were held at St. Edmunds Parish on June 10th, 2016. Bill was laid to rest in North Vancouver Cemetery.
Avelino will be remembered by his family and friends as a hard working, happy and loyal person who always put the needs of others ahead of his own. He walked through this world with a practical and sensible head and a kind, loving and compassionate heart. His smile is forever etched in our thoughts. Everyone whose life he touched will miss Avelino Misola.
