The Carter family is very sad to announce the passing of their grand matriarch Catherine Ruth Carter. Ruth, born in Coleville, Saskatchewan on November 12th, 1915, passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on Wednesday evening, Aug 28th, 2019, after a very full life, and well into her 104th year. Ruth is pre-deceased by her dear husband of 51 years, Donald Carter, and by her sisters Noreen Vanebo and Doris Monkhouse. Ruth is survived by her brother Martin Cole, her daughter Pamela Carter, her son Kenneth Carter and spouse Ginette Carter, and her grand children Elisabeth Lefebvre and her fiancé Joe Pogson, Jonathan Carter, his spouse Megan Tweedy and their son and Ruth’s great grandson, Leo Carter, Nathalie Carter and spouse Kevin Wu, and Susan Carter, mother of Jonathan Carter and lifelong friend.
Ruth graduated a Registered Nurse from the Saskatoon City Hospital in1939 and married Donald in 1940. In their life together in the military and Nato Ruth spent decades travelling the world and living in cities large and small across Canada, France and Belgium. In later years Mom made family, friends and duplicate Bridge the focus of her life, staying close to her large family at as many events as she could manage and playing Bridge three times a week up until the very last moment. She made lasting friends with her bridge clubs, and her “stitch & bitch ladies, who gathered weekly to solve the world’s problems. She enjoyed her many friends at Amica Edgemont and her walks around the Edgemont Village streets every day. She was always a smiling face and powerful presence in the community.
When asked what she would attribute her long life and good health to she would say, her daily walk, happy hour with a glass of sherry, and a positive outlook. To her last day Ruth was a force to be reckoned with and a strong shoulder to lean on. Her family and friends will dearly miss her. Rest In Peace dear Ruth, Mom, Auntie, Grandma, and Great Gandma.
A Celebration of Life for Ruth will be held at the First Memorial Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC, at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019.
