Charmian Elizabeth Moul (formerly Cottingham, nee Tyrer) was born on September 23, 1927, in Regina, Saskatchewan. She passed away on October 12, 2024, at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, after a brave battle with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), surrounded by her loving family. She was 97.
Charm lived a fulfilling life, always engaging with and showing interest in the people around her. She was an independent, nurturing, generous soul with a passion for golf, the card games bridge & wizard, knitting, and crossword puzzles. She also loved to travel, shop, and engage in interior design.
Charm spent her early years in Regina and became a nurse in 1947. She married her highschool sweetheart John (Jack) Cottingham in 1949 and when Jack joined the Royal Canadian Navy they moved back and forth between Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and Victoria, BC, with a 2-year stay in Hawaii, having three children during these years. In 1973, when Jack joined the Canadian Coast Guard, they settled in North Vancouver, BC, where they lived the rest of their lives. Jack passed away in 1987 due to complications of Hemochromatosis. Charm found companionship with Chester Barber, a fellow golfer, until his passing in 2004. In 2006, Charm married Albert Moul and they had many wonderful adventures traveling, golfing, volunteering together, and spending time with the Moul and Cottingham families.
Charm worked in a Lynn Valley doctor’s office as a medical office assistant for many years. She was also a keen organizer and volunteer, starting in her early days in Dartmouth with the Naval Wives Association. In BC, she served as the Board Chair of the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society, helping raise awareness of iron overload. She organized women’s golfing events at both local and provincial levels and was Ladies’ Captain at Seymour Golf and Country Club. She also volunteered at the Lions Gate Hospital auxiliary gift shop and weighed babies at the infant and parent drop-in at Parkgate Community Centre. She loved giving back.
Charm is survived by her husband Albert Moul, her children Tom Cottingham (Wil), David Cottingham (Catherine), Nancy Cottingham Powell (Ross), and her grandchildren, Matthew, Lisa, Anne (Stuart), John, Brendan, and Skyler. She will be greatly missed by friends and family, including Al’s daughters Carolynn, Kathy (Darryl), and Pam and their children.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024, 2pm at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, BC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Charm’s memory to the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society, Canadian Cancer Society, or Lions Gate Hospital.
