It is with heavy, but full hearts that we announce the passing of Dale William McLeod, son, brother, uncle, and friend. Dale is survived by his parents, Margaret and Dan, siblings Tyler (Laura, and their sons Maddox and Lachlan) McLeod and Jaclyn (Cameron) Pollock, the extended McLeod family, cats Ringo and Tess, and a wide network of supportive friends and caregivers.
Dale was born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and while his condition dictated the circumstances of his life, it did not define the nature of his character or the strength of his will. Dale consistently defied the odds, owing in equal measures to his own tenacity and love for life and the unwavering devotion and unsurpassed quality of care flowing from his mother, Margaret. He also received support from, and enjoyed the company of, the many fine people from Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Canuck Place, Make a Wish, Children's Hospital, Vancouver Coastal Health, and particularly the local and international Powerchair Soccer community.
Imbued with a competitive, inquisitive, and creative spirit, Dale was an athlete, a lifelong learner, and prolific experimenter. His main passion was Powerchair Soccer, a sport he played with his friends and teammates for more than two decades, including as goalie for Team Canada. He traveled to participate in tournaments across North America and internationally, including at the 2011 and 2017 FIPFA World Cups in Paris and Florida. From a young age Dale was also fascinated by technology, electronics, and machinery, constantly designing and building projects for both his enjoyment and curiosity, and also to improve their accessibility to suit his needs. His enquiring mind often led him on deep dives into the latest research on a wide variety of subjects, which were frequently on the agenda at family dinners.
Though his life may not have been as long or as easy as it could have, it was full, and Dale lived it in the manner he chose. His outlook was to make the most of the opportunities and time that were given, and he was surrounded by love and support throughout. Dale embodied the family motto in braving the challenges he faced - Hold Fast.
