The family of Don Nunn are very saddened to announce his passing on February 13, 2025. Don challenged cancer with the strength, optimism and positive attitude that he carried throughout life and never let it take away his passion for living life to its fullest.
Don was born with his twin sister, Donna, on August 15, 1952, in Calgary. He was born into a military family which involved several moves throughout Canada, finally settling in Nelson where he completed his education at L.V. Rogers Secondary, then returned to Edmonton to complete his post-secondary education in Architectural Design. It was the constant moving throughout his earlier years that gave Don his adventurous spirit, taking him to many countries throughout Europe, Mexico, New Zealand, and Australia. His last trip was to Iceland, which had long been on his bucket list.
Don was an outdoor enthusiast with a passion for downhill skiing, cycling, swimming, hiking and camping in his VW Westfalia van. He loved returning to Nelson to visit his family and friends, ski the slopes of Whitewater and Red, hike Pulpit Rock and enjoy Kootenay life.
Don’s career took him to Vancouver where he had the opportunity to enhance his skills as an architectural designer. It is here that he met his future wife, Dagmar, and they settled in North Vancouver where they welcomed their two children, Cassidy and Thomas. Don loved being a dad and enjoyed introducing the beauty and wonder of the outdoors by taking them on annual camping trips, skiing, and travelling. Among his greatest moments was becoming a grandfather to his precious granddaughters River and Reya; they were the light of his life.
Don’s retirement years were spent in Sechelt where he and Dagmar enjoyed the dream home he designed and built, and the peacefulness of rural living.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Marie and Harold Nunn, and brother Tommy. He is survived by his wife Dagmar Kaffanke-Nunn, Cassidy (Brian Kinrade), Thomas (Genevieve Rocheleau), grandchildren, River and Reya; brother, Ted Nunn (Tracey), Pat Nunn (John Bassani), Terri Richardson (Rob), Donna Mawson, Melodie Schilling, many nieces and nephews and scores of close friends, and his beloved little dog and sidekick, Lucy.
Don has been described as many things by his family and friends, among them kind, sweet, generous, cheerful, loyal, calm, hospitable, a great sense of humour, a wonderful story teller, honest and with deep integrity, and this quote from a good friend: “He was Superman hidden in the quiet affable Clark Kent. I’m sure he was your Superman.”
There will be a Celebration of Life in North Vancouver on May 24th followed by one in Nelson in the summer.
