Dorothy Bernice Fleischer

December 4, 1919September 2, 2019

Dorothy passed away peacefully at the age of 99 years, leaving an irreparable void in the lives of those left behind: daughter Barbara (Ramiro Miranda), grandchildren: Veronica (Nicholas Hebeler), Patricia (Bruce Moerike) and Richard (Leticia Rollin). Great grandchildren: Alexandra, Kenneth, Benjamin and Lucia, as well as her 7 surviving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Basil Hingston, who was killed in World War 2, and by her second husband, Gerry Fleischer, in 1981. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Robert, her three sisters: Zoe Bellamy, Thelma Burns and Barbara Marshall, and her sister-in-law Aileen Purtill.

Dorothy was born in Montreal shortly after her parents, Sydney and Nancy Gaskill, arrived from England on their way to the Peace River country of northern Alberta, where she spent her childhood. The family later moved to Edmonton where she completed high school, and a few years later to B.C., where she met and married her husband, Basil Hingston, of Montreal, who was at that time stationed in Esquimalt with the Canadian Armed Forces. A year after the birth of their daughter, Barbara, Basil was killed in the Battle of Arnhem. For the next few years Dorothy and Barbara lived at the Gaskill home in Vancouver, while Dorothy worked as a secretary at UBC. In 1960 she married Gerry Fleischer, with whom she spent 21 very happy years, until she again became a widow.

With her usual strength and determination she continued to keep active. She enjoyed traveling, meeting with friends, and 25 years of volunteer service at Lions Gate Hospital.

Dorothy was an unfailing pillar of support for her family until her final years when she became incapacitated by Alzheimer's.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Dania Home, who cared for Dorothy with compassion and kindness during her last years.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Fleischer family.
