It is with heavy hearts that we share that Dorothy Porter, our Mom and Grandma has passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband John, survived by her daughter Joanne Bacchus (Tony), granddaughter Alexina (Devlin).
Dorothy was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to Alexander and Nora Stewart on October 6, 1941. Her family moved between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where Dorothy would attend high school. Dorothy subsequently attended and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan. After university, Dorothy and her lifelong friend Donna travelled to Japan, where they stayed for a few years to teach. From there, they travelled to Australia where Dorothy met her husband, John. After returning to Canada, Dorothy and her family eventually settled in North Vancouver (1976).
Dorothy was a long-time employee of the City of North Vancouver, before retiring in 2004. In her retirement years, Dorothy took great pleasure from being able to spend significant time with her granddaughter, who she developed an extremely close bond with. Dorothy also participated in many activities/groups, including as an Ikebana instructor, avid quilter, knitter and crocheter. Notably, she took on a very active role in many of the community groups she was involved with, and very much enjoyed being able to travel and spend time with her very close friends.
Dorothy was a proud mother and grandmother, remembered by many as being the biggest cheerleader at her daughter’s numerous music concerts, and then later as an avid fan on the sideline of soccer fields cheering on her granddaughter. Dorothy also very much enjoyed spending time with her grand-dog Ollie, who was a great source of comfort to her.
Dorothy was a strong stoic person, with a witty sense of humour. She is regarded by those who knew her as being very kind and generous, and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday July 15th at 2:00pm, at Boal Chapel, in North Vancouver.
