Evelyn “Eve” was predeceased by husband of 52 years James “J”, sister Doreen, brother Frank, and grandson Mitchell. She is survived by son Michael (Kara), daughter Sarah (Alex), grandkids Maddy, Cameron, Evan and Paige, sister Dorothy, in-laws Ray (Win), Kathy (George), also loving companion Merv, and family in England and Canada.
Eve was born in Bootle England and, after meeting J at a local badminton club as a teenager, would go on to live a life that was “never boring”. After marrying in 1967, the two set off on the adventure of a lifetime, moving sight unseen, to Thompson, Manitoba, where Michael and then Sarah were born.
Canada quickly became home to Eve and she embraced many aspects of the northern lifestyle – learning to skate on the backyard rink, cross country skiing, camping, homemade pizza and Hockey Night in Canada on Saturdays. Eve always remained connected to family and friends in England through phone calls, cards, letter and visits. She also kept up British traditions like Christmas cake and trifle and traditional Sunday dinners with roast beef and Yorkshire puddings. Eve and J lived an active lifestyle, making many friends through badminton, squash and golf. When they moved to Vancouver in 1984 Eve discovered a new passion – walking in Lynn Canyon with her beloved family dogs (Inky, Shadow and then Murphy). Their house on Robinson Road was always a welcome place, thanks to J’s generosity and Eve’s warm and loving ways. Eve gave freely of her time and heart – volunteering at her kids’ and grandkids’ schools, for their sports teams and canvassing for local charities. After J’s passing in 2020, Eve moved to Sunrise Care home and in typical Eve fashion, quickly made new friends, including dear Merv, and began volunteering her time as ‘ambassador’, which involved welcoming new residents.
The simple things in life brought Eve joy – a chat with a neighbor, a cup of tea with a friend, a crossword puzzle, a flower blooming or a Deep Bay sunset, but nothing brought Eve more joy than being with her family, especially in her treasured role as “Nana”. Although her 15 year battle with dementia took many things from her, Eve retained her sense of humour and warm loving spirit until the end. Special thank you goes to the caring and devoted staff at Sunrise and nurses and doctors at Lion’s Gate Hospital.
In memory of Eve, please consider joining the walk for Alzheimer’s, donating to a charity of your choice or simply doing something kind for someone else.
