I'm sure Fernando is listening to music and smiling down on us all.  I will certainly miss his wide smile and witty sense of humour!  What a tremendous loss!  Rest in Peace my friend......

I am Rob Lee, one of the partners with RLZ Holdings and I had a mix-up with notifying you about attending . So my apologies for the late reply but I would like to know if I could still attend the funeral tomorrow.

My deepest condolences for the passing of Fernando. He was far too young...my prayers are with your family during this time of loss.

When I first thought of joining forces with other professionals to share office space, Fernando Zarate was at the top of my list. I first met Fernando in 2015, shortly after setting up CityState. I had designed a new house for a vacant site on Dundas St. in Burnaby. A friend referred me to Fernando, a Structural Engineer who had recently moved from Colombia. That first house, one of many projects I completed with Fernando, was designed and approved in record time. It served as the launch of a long-term professional relationship. It was also the start of a deep personal friendship. Fernando’s role was critical in creating the look and feel we wanted for the new office space we now enjoy every day. Removing ceiling joists, vaulting the roof of a 100-year-old heritage building, and upgrading the whole structure to modern seismic standards is a Structural Engineering feat. The other challenge I presented to Fernando was that rather than specify his own new beams, he had to re-use the live edge wood beams I brought to the site. Fernando always had a joyful and positive attitude. He was solution-oriented, always thinking of simple and practical ways to meet our clients’ objectives. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a chance to move into his new office due to illness. We stayed in touch during his convalescence over the past eight months. Fernando my friend, you will be missed.
