EVANS, Grace Eileen RN was born in the border city of Lloydminster to the late school teacher/homemaker Ora Marie (nee Moore) & farmer Eric Desmond Evans. Grace spent her early years in rural Alberta, with schooling in Spencer, Golden Valley & Kitscoty.
Grace graduated from the University of Alberta School of Nursing in 1954 and completed post-grad & Bachelor of Nursing at McGill University in 1966. Nursing practice across Canada, including with the Victorian Order of Nurses, as School of Nursing instructor and a community & public health nurse in Nova Scotia, Ontario & BC, provided Grace much fulfilment until her retirement in 1992.
Sparked by two years as a CP Air flight attendant in the 1950s, Grace travelled the globe throughout her life, seeing all continents via multiple modes of transportation (including such highlights as rafting in the Arctic, cruising in the Antarctic, canoeing in the Amazon, camel riding in the Middle East, as well as train & bus travel in the Americas, Europe, Asia & Australia), creating lasting memories, making new friends and researching family history along the way.
Grace was a long-time resident of Burnaby, BC. In addition to travel, Grace got pleasure from gardening, photography, driving her Mustang, collecting various items, volunteering & helping others, and socializing with classmates, friends & family.
Grace survived two bouts of cancer (colon & bladder) in her seventies & early eighties, and lived with dementia later in life.
Although Grace never married or had children of her own, she enjoyed being an aunt (and great aunt to three grand-nieces & two grand-nephews) and partaking in many family gatherings.
She is survived by her younger brother Alan Evans (Audrey Lowe), former sister-in-law Ann (Sonny) Hockey, brother-in-law Cecil Fietz, two nephews Evan & Alan Fietz, two nieces Laura Fietz & Jennifer Evans, as well as many cousins & their families.
Grace was predeceased by her sister Edith Fietz (1931-2018), her parents and several well-loved aunts & uncles.
Special thanks to the staff at the Salvation Army Buchanan Lodge for their care and kindness during her last two years.
A small service will be held at Ocean View Funeral Home & Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, on Monday, May 5, 2025 at 1 pm.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations can be made to health, medical &/or hospital-related Canadian charities of which Grace generously supported many over the years
