It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Allan Keith—known to most as Al—at the age of 92 in North Vancouver, BC.
Born in Nanaimo, BC, on July 26, 1932, to Bert and Isabel Keith, Al was predeceased by his beloved wife Maureen, with whom he shared nearly 63 wonderful years, and by his brother Donald. He is survived by his children Gillian (Mike), Geoffrey (Dawne), and Sally (Michael); his grandchildren Chris (Alexandra), Katie, Matthew, Danny, April, and Ryan; and many extended family members and friends.
Al graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering. His long and fulfilling career in the pulp and paper industry took him from northern BC—working in Prince Rupert and Kitimat with Canadian Cellulose and Eurocan—to the global stage. In the mid-1970s, he joined Stothert Engineering, which led him to projects around the world. He had especially fond memories of his time at Southern Paper Mill in Mgololo, Tanzania, and later at Bai Bang Paper Mill in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Al was known professionally as a generous mentor, always keeping an open door for colleagues. He inspired many with his intellect, humor, and knowledge.
Al and Maureen made their home in North Vancouver, where they could always be counted on to host a pool party, family gathering, or even a wedding. Their home was a hub of laughter, hospitality, and community.
They also spent many cherished vacations at Kihei Surfside in Maui, where afternoons were filled with dice games and evenings with sunset gatherings. Al loved his time at the Beach Club in Parksville as well.
A lover of cribbage, dice, Paigow, and slot machines, Al was always up for a game—and always had a slightly inappropriate joke ready to share, followed by a hearty laugh at his own delivery. His sense of humor, warmth, and generosity defined him.
A small celebration of life (wake) will be held this summer to honour and remember him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Al’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
